This article provides valuable information on the chances and the possibilities of Business Intelligence applying in organizations. Three theories—the Resource-Based View, Maturity Models, and Critical Success Factors—were used to investigate Business Intelligence issues. They provided a comprehensive view on Business Intelligence. Using a semi-structured interview method, the results from 20 organizations applying Business Intelligence are presented. Finally, based on the analysis of the literature and on the qualitative surveys, conclusions for future research in Business Intelligence are provided.

Toward Better Understanding and Use of Business Intelligence in Organizations

This research intends to shed some light on the influence of culture on the learners understanding of culture specific jokes. For this purpose, the responses of the volunteer students of first year master of English at Constantine University have been collected. The research work is mainly concerned with finding whether the high exposure to the foreign language culture has anything to do with the learner’s level of understanding of jokes. Both the quantitative and qualitative analysis indicated that there is an association between the learners’ level of understanding of the jokes and their exposure to culture. Despite the limited scope of this study, the research findings revealed interesting implications on research to the teaching of the foreign culture to students at university level.

Managing an organization requires access to information in order to monitor the organization activities and assess its
performance. Indeed, the increasing demand for information plus the growing data volumes and customer populations can pose problems to the organization. A way to tackle these issues can be found in Business Intelligence (BI) solutions, which provide organizations with timely and integrated information that is crucial to the
understanding of the business environment and customer needs. These solutions, usually in the form of BI systems
allow the organizations to gather, store, access and analyze corporate data sources for business planning and
decision-making. Academic institutions, an example of these organizations, require information too for planning their
academic resources and achieving academic excellence. For that reason, this article describes a study that was
aimed at defining and developing data warehouse (DW) for academic domain in a public university in Malaysia. A
dimensional model (DM) of the DW in Student Affairs subject area was also defined. Then, a prototype of a BI
application based on the proposed DW model was developed and linked to the university’s information portal. SAS
ETL and SAS Enterprise Guide were utilized successfully in developing the prototype.
