Statecharts: A visual formalism for complex systems

Ontologies tend to be found everywhere. They are viewed as the silver bullet for many applications, such as database integration, peer-to-peer systems, e-commerce, semantic web services, or social networks. However, in open or evolving systems, such as the semantic web, different parties would, in general, adopt different ontologies. Thus, merely using ontologies, like using XML, does not reduce heterogeneity: it just raises heterogeneity problems to a higher level. Euzenat and Shvaikos book is devoted to ontology matching as a solution to the semantic heterogeneity problem faced by computer systems. Ontology matching aims at finding correspondences between semantically related entities of different ontologies. These correspondences may stand for equivalence as well as other relations, such as consequence, subsumption, or disjointness, between ontology entities. Many different matching solutions have been proposed so far from various viewpoints, e.g., databases, information systems, and artificial intelligence. The second edition of Ontology Matching has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the most recent advances in this quickly developing area, which resulted in more than 150 pages of new content. In particular, the book includes a new chapter dedicated to the methodology for performing ontology matching. It also covers emerging topics, such as data interlinking, ontology partitioning and pruning, context-based matching, matcher tuning, alignment debugging, and user involvement in matching, to mention a few. More than 100 state-of-the-art matching systems and frameworks were reviewed. With Ontology Matching, researchers and practitioners will find a reference book that presents currently available work in a uniform framework. In particular, the work and the techniques presented in this book can be equally applied to database schema matching, catalog integration, XML schema matching and other related problems. The objectives of the book include presenting (i) the state of the art and (ii) the latest research results in ontology matching by providing a systematic and detailed account of matching techniques and matching systems from theoretical, practical and application perspectives.

Ontology Matching

Systems composed of interacting autonomous agents offer a promising software engineering approach for developing applications in complex domains. However, this multiagent system paradigm introduces a number of new abstractions and design/development issues when compared with more traditional approaches to software development. Accordingly, new analysis and design methodologies, as well as new tools, are needed to effectively engineer such systems. Against this background, the contribution of this article is twofold. First, we synthesize and clarify the key abstractions of agent-based computing as they pertain to agent-oriented software engineering. In particular, we argue that a multiagent system can naturally be viewed and architected as a computational organization, and we identify the appropriate organizational abstractions that are central to the analysis and design of such systems. Second, we detail and extend the Gaia methodology for the analysis and design of multiagent systems. Gaia exploits the aforementioned organizational abstractions to provide clear guidelines for the analysis and design of complex and open software systems. Two representative case studies are introduced to exemplify Gaia's concepts and to show its use and effectiveness in different types of multiagent system.

Enticing online consumers: an extended technology acceptance perspective

Data analysis is used as a common method in modern science research, which is across communication science, computer science and biology science. Clustering, as the basic composition of data analysis, plays a significant role. On one hand, many tools for cluster analysis have been created, along with the information increase and subject intersection. On the other hand, each clustering algorithm has its own strengths and weaknesses, due to the complexity of information. In this review paper, we begin at the definition of clustering, take the basic elements involved in the clustering process, such as the distance or similarity measurement and evaluation indicators, into consideration, and analyze the clustering algorithms from two perspectives, the traditional ones and the modern ones. All the discussed clustering algorithms will be compared in detail and comprehensively shown in Appendix Table 22.

A Comprehensive Survey of Clustering Algorithms

In this paper we present a novel approach for specifying the interface aspects of a hypermedia application with Data Views. Using Data Views (ADV) it is possible to describe, in an implementation-independent way, important aspects of the design such as which media objects the user of the hypermedia application will perceive, in which way the user will interact with these objects, and which interface transformation will take place while navigating through the hypermedia. ADVs are presented in the context of an object-oriented hypermedia design method (OOHDM). We briefly discuss which design problems must be solved in order to specify the interface of a hypermedia application; then we present Configuration Diagrams as a design tool to specify the static relationships between interface objects and nodes in a hypermedia application. ADVcharts, a notation combining concepts from Statecharts, Objectcharts and Petri Nets are later presented as a formalism to specify the dynamic aspects of a hypermedia application. We finally discuss some further issues such as reuse in the large of interface models

In this paper, we present a DSL to specify business and Web transactions in a systematic way, addressing both informational and behavioral perspectives. Our meta-model is based on the reification of transactions, where transactions are modeled as first-class types, supporting attributes, associations, operations and state machines. Treating transactions as domain type instances facilitates the interplay with other models, such as the navigational model, which is a view of the domain type model.

ACCORD, a framework for dialog representation systems using commitment is proposed as a means for representing some of the negotiation aspects characteristic of cooperative work. The modelling of each participant's range of information about the dialog, and its interaction with the others, is represented by commitments - placed in a commitment store - generated during the conversation process. Cliches - conversation stereotypes - are state transition machines that control the sequencing of dialog events in a conversation between two participants. The notion of contract - mapped to Winograd's Conversation for Action diagram - is presented as an example of the framework's ability for representing conversation cliches for cooperative work.

The Web has evolved into a global environment addressing all kinds of application delivery, ranging from small-scale and short-lived services to large-scale, enterprise workflow systems distributed over many servers. The design, implementation, maintenance respectively evolution, and federation of such Web applications requires the application of software engineering practice, specifically as the life-cycle of Web applications is dramatically influenced by arising technologies, user-behavior, and state-of-the-art trends in electronic commerce.Nevertheless most of today's Web application development is still ad-hoc, which may result from the Web's legacy as a coarse-grained, document-centric information system rather than an application platform. Furthermore, the navigational metaphor intrinsic to the Web opens up new ways of managing huge information spaces, and the way users interact with applications to perform a task.Because the Web implementation model does not relate well to state-of-the-art software development models, it is rather difficult to define frameworks that enable the construction of Web Information System applications, reuse design knowledge captured in design patterns, or bridge the gap between a design model and the Web implementation model.This problematic was recently referred to as Web Crisis - indicating that the lack of a structured approach will restrict the process of developing or federating more complex systems in the Web relating to cost reduction and quality improvement. In the recent years, this "web-experience" in the Hypermedia and Web community evolved into a new discipline called Web Engineering. Thus, Web Engineering focuses on the evolution of a profound engineering process and dedicated technologies, methods, and models for the development and maintenance of Web-applications.The Minitrack consists of six papers that cover a broad range of aspects concerning Web Engineering:In "Conceptualizing Resource Discovery on the Internet - Sampling Search Services" Gisle Hannemyr explores concepts of search engines, addressing problems found in today's internet search portals. In "Towards a Relationship Navigation Analysis" Yoonhee Yoo and Michael Bieber discuss the importance for determining the relationships within conceptual domains or implementations. Thus, they introduce the Relationship Navigation Analysis for system analysis, which is based on a generic relationship taxonomy and provides a systematic way of identifying useful relationships in application domains. German and Cowan investigate many design patterns of the Web community in "Towards a unified catalog of hypermedia design patterns". They analyze the vocabularies and taxonomies of design patterns for the Web that are in use today and propose to rewrite the patterns using a uniform vocabulary.Markus Schranz, Johannes Weidl, and Stefan Zechmeister argue in "Engineering Complex World Wide Web Services with JESSICA and UML" that complex Web services are comparable to large software systems. Therefore, the management and engineering process requires dedicated methodologies and processes. The authors introduce the use of the object-oriented language JESSICA and its support by the Uniform Modeling Language UML. They demonstrate the use of the engineering system with a real world application. In their paper "A Schema-Based Approach to Web Engineering" Christoph Kuhnke, Andreas Turk, and Josef Schneeberger present a tool that supports their process model for publishing. They suggest the separation of content, layout, navigation, and structure for Document Engineering. This discipline focuses on document design, authoring, and production, and is seen as a methodology of Web Engineering. In "Using Finite State Machines as Design and Engineering Model for Database Backed Web Applications" Karl M. Goschka and Jurgen Falb examine the use of hyperlink for user interaction with relational databases. They present an approach using finite state machines as basis for modelling dynamically generated hyperlinks, which in turn are used to interact with databases.
