Bull., 90 (1981) 89-101. It is often postulated that the opportunity to exercise control over an unpleasant or painful event will reduce the amount of pain or stress that the individual experiences. In this review paper, the author examines literature dealing with the relationship between control over an aversive event and the amount of stress or pain that the event produces. Control can be considered behavioral, cognitive, informational, or retrospective. A typology of control is presented, and research that relates these 4 types of control to reactions to aversive stimuli is reviewed. The author presents a unifying theme after reviewing several theories relevant to this area. She proposes that reactions to potentially stressful events depend upon their meaning for the individual. Accordingly, she postulates 3 dimensions of meaning: endurable versus unendurable, means to desirable outcomes versus no desirable outcomes, and planned versus random events.

O presente artigo apresenta um panorama historico da psicologia escolar no Brasil desde a transicao do seculo XIX para o XX, com a formacao dos primeiros laboratorios de psicologia para estudos de criancas com problemas de aprendizagem, constituidos, principalmente, a partir da influencia norte-americana e francesa. Discutem-se, ainda, momentos posteriores de crise, localizados na decada de 1980, e a busca por novas bases teorico-metodologicas para a atuacao. O artigo esta dividido em duas partes: em primeiro lugar, apresentam-se um panorama dos principais fatos historicos e dados de pesquisas acerca das concepcoes e da atuacao em psicologia escolar no cenario brasileiro; posteriormente, discutem-se temas contemporâneos que emergiram a partir de um movimento de ressignificacao das praticas de algumas acoes que vem sendo propostas a partir da decada de 1990.

Psicologia escolar no Brasil: considerações e reflexões históricas

Neste trabalho, uma revisao da literatura foi realizada com o objetivo de identificar trabalhos que descrevessem modalidades terapeuticas nao tradicionais que o enfermeiro psiquiatrico tem capacidade para utilizar em sua pratica diaria. As modalidades descritas foram Musica, Atividade Motora, Acompanhamento Terapeutico e Ioga. A Musica pode reconstruir identidades, integrar pessoas, reduzir a ansiedade e proporcionar a construcao de auto-estima positiva. A Atividade Motora aumenta a auto-estima, reduz a ociosidade e aumenta a participacao do paciente psiquiatrico em outras atividades. No Acompanhamento Terapeutico, o enfermeiro acompanha o paciente na realidade de sua rotina diaria, buscando sua reintegracao as diversas situacoes que necessita enfrentar. A Ioga permite melhora da memoria, reduz a tensao emocional, a depressao, a ansiedade e a irritabilidade, promove relaxamento e maior sentimento de autodominio. Toda atividade deve estar integrada a um plano terapeutico global para cada usuario e fazer parte da programacao diaria do servico.

Research has pointed out creativity as a sociocultural and contextually embedded phenomenon. As a consequence, the effect of cultural factors on the manifestation of creativity has been discussed worldwide. The purpose of this chapter is, therefore, to analyze the development of creativity in the Brazilian culture. A brief description of the Brazilian culture is provided. Models of creativity developed by Brazilian researchers, as well as a review of creativity studies conducted in the educational environment, are presented. Guidelines for future cross-cultural studies on creativity are also suggested. Creativity in the Brazilian Culture

The objective of this research was to study the effect of regular physical activity of men and women over 40 on their self-concept. The Self-concept Factorial Scale was administered to 200 subjects, half of them practicing some kind of regular physical activity and the other half being sedentary. The Anova 2X2 revealed a main effect of physical activity and gender on several factors of the self-concept. The scores were higher for the experimental group on self-confidence, self-control, and somatic self. Men scored higher on self-confidence while women on moral self. It was concluded that regular physical activity is beneficial for self-concept.

This study was conducted aiming to investigate the creativity and perception of classroom creativity climate of students from open, intermediary and traditional schools. One hundred and seventy-four 4th grade students from eight private schools in Brasilia participated in the study. The results indicated significant differences among students from open, intermediary and traditional schools regarding fluency in the creativity subtest Picture Complementation, as well as a significant interaction between gender and type of school in relation to the originality in the same test. About the perception of the classroom climate for creativity, the results revealed that there is a significant interaction between gender and type of school only regarding the factor Interest for the Student’s Learning.
