Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing: Materials, Processes and Systems

ABSTRACT Manufacturers are facing increasing pressures to adapt their operations to meet sustainability goals. Research and developments on industrial digitalization (aka Industry 4.0) present new opportunities to create and capture value in ever-more complex and connected industrial systems. However, digitalization does not always align with sustainability, and case studies combining these two topics are still scarce. To address these gaps, we adopted a bottom-up approach to (1) identify existing environmental solutions and their implemen\tation challenges by reviewing 208 empirical studies, and (2) formulate eight propositions to guide further work so that digitalization supports environmental improvements more systematically. Finally, a framework for Digitalized Sustainable Manufacturing consisting of four research themes is proposed, pointing to future research needed to align industrial development with sustainable development goals. The propositions and framework aim to structure and focus future research by targeting specifically the challenges encountered when implementing environmental solutions in manufacturing.

A systematic review of empirical studies on green manufacturing: eight propositions and a research framework for digitalized sustainable manufacturing

The growing demand for electricity has been stimulating studies and actions not only to increase the generation capacity of plants, but also the rational use of this important form of energy. As a result, there is a notable growth in the number of publications related to the theme, thus generating too many works, which makes filtering and analysis complex. In this context, the bibliographic review is an important tool for quantitative and qualitative verification of studies published in different journals. Given the above, this article aims to perform a bibliometric analysis of Brazilian scientific production on energy efficiency applied to electricity consumption. The Scopus database was used to search for articles related to the topic. A total of 66 papers were found in the period from 2004 to 2020, however, after a dynamic reading it was found that only 37 of them effectively talk about energy efficiency linked to electricity consumption. Of these, 83.8% correspond to case study works, 10.8% to public policies and 5.4% were literature review studies. The analysis showed that most of the case study articles were applied to the industrial sector (45.2%), especially to the driving systems. In addition, it was observed that even though the residential sector is one of the main consumers of energy, there is a small number of publications, thus indicating a gap to be filled.

Eficiência energética aplicada ao consumo de eletricidade: Um estudo de revisão bibliográfica

To deal with a constant energy rising prices and significant demands for minimizing environmental impacts related to the electricity generation using fossil fuels, the theme “energy consumption” has brought a plenty of discussion onto the agenda of manufacturing industries nowadays. Therefore, the reduction in energy consumption in manufacturing processes is a fundamental issue for the industrial segment at the present time. Such subject requires knowledge about the energy requirements from machines and all involved peripheral equipment. Although the machining processes have always been the subject of several researches and studies, energy analysis has become a relatively new topic, as well as “energy efficiency”. To improve energy efficiency in machining processes particularly in machine tools (MTs), energy consumption data must be obtained to help in process planning and also contribute to improve the efficiency of machines, as a whole. Moreover, to meet growing market demand for more efficient machines and global competitiveness in the manufacturing sector, MT manufacturers are facing major challenges to improve productivity and reduce energy consumption. Considering the increasing energy demands and industrial sustainability, the present research presents a detailed study of energy consumption in a two-spindle turning center and suggests strategies to reduce energy consumption in MTs as a whole. The results obtained, so far, indicates that optimizing the operational behavior of MTs through smart operation modes, by adapting the power demand to the current production requirements, seems to be a good procedure to reduce the amount of energy consumed. It also makes the processes and machines more efficient and improves environmental performance of machining processes, in general.
