Journal ArticleDOI
Coastal protection from tsunamis and cyclones provided by mangrove wetlands – a review
TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted a review of recent research regarding the extent of coastal protection provided by mangroves that includes observational studies, numerical modeling, and laboratory experiments, and concluded that observational studies have not provided conclusive results on the effect of extreme natural disasters such as cyclone storm surges and small tsunamis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protecting the Florida Everglades wetlands with wetlands: Can stormwater phosphorus be reduced to oligotrophic conditions?
William J. Mitsch,William J. Mitsch,Li Zhang,Darryl E. Marois,Darryl E. Marois,Keunyea Song,Keunyea Song +6 more
TL;DR: A three-year experiment, involving mesocosms planted with Everglades-native wetland plants, was conducted in the Florida everglades from March 2010 to March 2013 as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
A mangrove creek restoration plan utilizing hydraulic modeling
TL;DR: Simulation results showed that the proposed creek extension would restore a twice-daily flooding regime to a majority of the adjacent mangrove forest and that there would still be minimal tidal influence on the brackish marsh area, keeping its salinity at an acceptable level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modeling phosphorus retention at low concentrations in Florida Everglades mesocosms
TL;DR: In this article, a three-year mesocosm study was performed investigating the effects of different plant communities on P retention within engineered wetlands, and a dynamic model was constructed in the high-level simulation software STELLA, using water, soil, weather, and plant data from this study.
Journal ArticleDOI
Constructed wetlands to solve agricultural drainage pollution in South Florida: Development of an advanced simulation tool for design optimization
TL;DR: In this article, a mechanistic phosphorus model was implemented into a time-space-dependent mathematical simulation platform (COMSOL Multiphysics™) which has been calibrated with wetland mesocosm data.
