Pattern recognition is not a new subject. Its principles and methodologies have influenced the course of technological development for many years in almost every knowledge-based field. To some fields, pattern recognition is a major tool for problem- solving, capable of producing dramatic results. To others, it has been accompanied by failure and disappointment. Despite the mixed results, however, pattern recognition has continued to be a fascinating field of research and development in its own right. This is evidenced by the growing list of activities, academic and industrial alike, relating to pattern recognition work.

Some Implications of Interactive Graphic Computer Systems for Data Analysis and Statistics

The problems of optical character recognition are arranged according to their difficulties. This arrangement gives a bird’s eye view of the research activities in past, present, and future. The tremendous work to solve these problems is looked at from the angle of “space versus description.” The word “space” means a functional analysis approach rather than a statistical one and the word “description” means a structural analysis approach, in each of which some representative work is mentioned historically. Finally, these two approaches are discussed comparatively.

A Short Survey of Character Recognition

: The report describes the implementation of a series of applications programs and graphic techniques on the On-Line Pattern Analysis and Recognition System (OLPARS) previously developed at RADC. The report is an addendum to RADC-TR-71-177 (AD-732 235) and is therefore a continuation in format and information content to that document. Sections 1 and 2 describe the overview of the additions and modifications to OLPARS in the areas of structure analysis, logic design, and measurement reduction. The remainder of the report contains changes, additions and deletions to the user manuals, programmer's manual and flow charts previously published as RADC-TR-71-177. (Author)

Programs for On-Line Pattern Analysis and Recognition System (OLPARS).

: This report discusses a research effort whose object is the design of a handprint alpha-numeric reader capable of human recognition rates. The effort included: Collection of a large data base of unconstrained handprinted alpha-numeric characters; Editing the data to re- label mislabeled characters, remove noise, and delete totally illegible characters. A separate programming package (the Data Base Editing Package) was designed and implemented for this purpose; The design of new features to improve the performance of the system; The design of the recognition logic using an OLPARS-like program, the Alpha-Numeric Logic Package (ANLP), which used the expanded feature set; An independent test of the logic using a set of 6127 characters not included in the design set; and, Analysis of the results of the independent test to develop reject strategies to reduce substitution errors.

: Since the advent of the general purpose digital computer there has been a growing interest in producing machines which are capable of duplicating the recognition and decision making functions previously reserved for humans. The relevant body of knowledge which has been generated out of this interest has been given the name pattern recognition theory. RADC, in conjunction with Pattern Analysis and Recognition Corp.* is pioneering in the development of a complete facility for solving pattern recognition and other associated problems. The first major step in this development is the implementation of the On-Line Pattern Analysis and RECOGNITION System - OLPARS. This report describes, in detail, the OLPARS system which has been implemented on a CDC-1604B computer system at RADC. The system description is complete as of the data of this writing. (Author)
