Acquisition of news and information, mail and even social interactions and entertainment have become more and more computer based. These technological developments are not in line with a change in the way people interact with computers. Techniques from the field of AI, in particular so-called autonomous agents, can be used to implement a complementary style of interaction, which has been referred to as indirect management. Agents assist users in a range of different ways. They hide the complexity of difficult tasks, they perform tasks on the user's behalf, they can train or teach the user, they help different users collaborate, and they monitor events and procedures. The chapter focuses on an approach to building interface agents. It presents results from several prototype agents that have been built using this approach, including agents that provide personalized assistance with meeting scheduling, email handling, electronic news filtering, and selection of entertainment.

Agents that reduce work and information overload

An intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions. The system can be implemented using any of a number of different platforms, such as the web, email, smartphone, and the like, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the system is based on sets of interrelated domains and tasks, and employs additional functionally powered by external services with which the system can interact.

Intelligent Automated Assistant

Recent debate has centered on the relative promise of focusing user-interface research on developing new metaphors and tools that enhance users abilities to directly manipulate objects versus directing effort toward developing interface agents that provide automation. In this paper, we review principles that show promise for allowing engineers to enhance human-computer interaction through an elegant coupling of automated services with direct manipulation. Key ideas will be highlighted in terms of the Lookout system for scheduling and meeting management.

Principles of mixed-initiative user interfaces

Explicitly stated program invariants can help programmers by identifying program properties that must be preserved when modifying code. In practice, however, these invariants are usually implicit. An alternative to expecting programmers to fully annotate code with invariants is to automatically infer likely invariants from the program itself. This research focuses on dynamic techniques for discovering invariants from execution traces. This article reports three results. First, it describes techniques for dynamically discovering invariants, along with an implementation, named Daikon, that embodies these techniques. Second, it reports on the application of Daikon to two sets of target programs. In programs from Gries's work (1981) on program derivation, the system rediscovered predefined invariants. In a C program lacking explicit invariants, the system discovered invariants that assisted a software evolution task. These experiments demonstrate that, at least for small programs, invariant inference is both accurate and useful. Third, it analyzes scalability issues, such as invariant detection runtime and accuracy, as functions of test suites and program points instrumented.

Comics have a rich visual vocabulary, and people find them app ing. They are also an effective form of communication. We ha built a system, called Comic Chat, that represents on-line com nications in the form of comics. Comic Chat automates numer aspects of comics generation, including balloon construction layout, the placement and orientation of comic characters, the fault selection of character gestures and expressions, the incorp tion of semantic panel elements, and the choice of zoom facto the virtual camera. This paper describes the mechanisms Comic Chat uses to perform this automation, as well as novel pects of the program’s user interface. Comic Chat is a working program, allowing groups of people to communicate over the Inter It has several advantages over other graphical chat programs cluding the availability of a graphical history, and a dynamic grap ical presentation.

Comic Chat

A comic generation system controls the generation of comic panels. A comic panel is a graphical representation of an instance in time of a sequential course of events. Each graphical representation typically includes a graphical representation of at least one character. The character has gestures that reflect a body pose and expressions that reflect a facial pose. Moreover, the character may have text associated with it (i.e., the character "speaks"), which is displayed in the comic panel within a bounded area called a "balloon." The comic generation system receives an interaction event and generates a comic panel. Examples of interaction events include text input by a user and selection of gestures and expressions by a user. When the interaction event provides text, the comic generation system automatically searches the text to identify any words or phrases that give rise to gestures and expressions for the character representing the user who provided the interaction event. Moreover, the comic generation system searches the text for trigger words that indicate alterations to the comic panel. The comic generation system generates the comic panel based on the results of its searches. The comic generation system also determines which characters to place in a comic panel, the positions of the characters, and the orientations of the characters. The comic generation system additionally determines the placement of balloons containing text. Also, the comic generation system determines when to generate a new comic panel and when to modify a comic panel that has already been generated. Furthermore, the comic generation system maintains a graphical history of the comic panels.

Method and system for generating comic panels

A multi-modal multi-lingual mobile device that facilitates intelligently automating an action. The device can automatically synchronize a user schedule based upon a user state, intention, preference and/or limitation. The device can employ sensors to automatically detect criteria by which to automatically implement an action. Moreover, the system can interrogate a user thus converging upon a user intention and/or preference. An analyzer component can intelligently evaluate the compiled criterion in order to automatically perform an action. The multi-modal multi-lingual mobile device can automatically facilitate identification of an individual. Other actions that are automatically performed can include modifying personal information manager data, translating languages into a language comprehendible to a user, etc. Implementation of these actions can be based at least in part upon an environmental factor, a conversation, a location factor and a temporal factor.

A server-based application includes at least one page file that identifies one or more server objects. The page file describes the particular layout and interaction of the server objects, such as controls, in such a way that a page of information may be transmitted to a target device. When designing the page file a developer may use declarative statement, so that certain properties of the specified controls may be altered based on the particular type of target device.
