We explore the finding of La Porta et al. that differences in "legal origin" account for part of cross-national diversity in labour regulation and corporate governance. We suggest that the finding needs a better historical grounding and that a mechanism which might explain it has not been adequately spelled out. In search of an explanation we focus on the role of complementarities between legal and economic institutions, and in particular the part played by the distinctive "legal cultures" of the common law and civil law in setting national systems on separate pathways to economic development.

Educational leadership has a critical role in the transformation of society, and for change to happen, effective leaders are key. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of principals’ gender on management effectiveness in secondary schools in Mtito-Andei Division, Kenya. The study sought to establish the relationship between the Principals’ gender and their effectiveness in management of the discipline, staff, students and school finance.  The study used ex-post facto research design.  Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents for the study. The sample size was 28 principals and 140 teachers. Data was collected by use of questionnaires and interview schedules and was analyzed by use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Conceptually, the chi-square test of independence statistic was computed. In hypotheses the four scores in management of discipline, management of staff personnel, management of students and management of financial resources were converted from continuous data to discreet data (categories) respectively and then Chi-square used to test the hypotheses. The researcher adopted a significance level of 0.05. The results of the data analysis show that there was a significant relationship between the principals’ gender and effectiveness in management of discipline. It was also found out that there was no significant relationship between the principles gender and their effectiveness in personnel management, student management and financial management.. The study recommends that the teachers’ employer (The Teachers’ Service Commission) should consider gender while promoting deputy principals to become principals in order to ensure that there is gender equity in the secondary schools. Principals’ Gender and Management Effectiveness in Secondary Schools: Case of Mtito Andei Division, Kenya

The Shimba Hills ecosystem along the south coast of Kenya is a key East African biodiversity hotspot. Historically, it is biogeographically assignable to the East African coastal biome. We examined the current Shimba Hills herpetofauna and their zoogeographical affinities to the coastal forests and nearby Eastern Arc Mountains biodiversity hotspots. The key studied sites included the Shimba Hills National Reserve, forest reserves, Kaya forests, and adjacent private land. Data on herpetofaunal richness were obtained from recent field surveys, literature, and specimens held at the National Museums of Kenya, Herpetology Section Collection, Nairobi. The Makadara, Mwele, and Longo-Mwagandi forests within the Shimba Hills National Reserve hosted the highest number of unique and rare species. Generally, the forest reserves and Kaya forests were important refuges for forest-associated species. On private land, Mukurumudzi Dam riparian areas were the best amphibian habitat and were host to three IUCN (Red List) Endangered-EN amphibian species, namely, Boulengerula changamwensis, Hyperolius rubrovermiculatus, and Afrixalus sylvaticus, as well as one snake species Elapsoidea nigra. Using herpetofauna as zoogeographic indicators, the Shimba Hills were determined to be at a crossroads between the coastal forests (13 endemic species) and the Eastern Arc Mountains (seven endemic species). Most of the Eastern Arc Mountains endemic species were from recent records, and thus more are likely to be found in the future. This ‘hybrid’ species richness pattern is attributable to the hilly topography of the Shimba Hills and their proximity to the Indian Ocean. This has contributed to the Shimba Hills being the richest herpetofauna area in Kenya, with a total of 89 and 36 reptile and amphibian species, respectively. Because of its unique zoogeography, the Shimba Hills ecosystem is undoubtedly a key biodiversity area for conservation investment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of cost of education on transition rates from primary to secondary schools in Kenya; a case of Machakos sub-county. The study was guided by the following objectives; to determine the average cost of putting a leaner in school; asses the rate at which cost of education affect retention rates in schools and determine the rate at which cost of education influence transition rate from primary to secondary school in Machakos sub-county. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population was 135 public primary school head teachers and 145 class 8 class teachers. Simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used to identify 40 head teachers and 40 class teachers as respondents for the study. The sample size was. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Validity and reliability of the instruments was ascertained. The study found that cost of education, significantly influence the transition rate from primary school to secondary schools in Machakos Sub-County. The study recommended that government should increase education subsidies to cushion parents from extra levies charged by schools. Sub county education office should come up with practical measures to sensitize the parents on the importance of education in order to change their attitude. Parents should be taught various income generating activities so as to make them financially stable as this will reduce dependency syndrome and enable them cater for both family basic needs and education of their children.
