A software framework is an architecture or infrastructure intended to enable the integration and interoperation of software components. Specialized types of software frameworks are those specifically intended to support the composition of models or other components within a simulation system. Such frameworks are intended to simplify the process of assembling a complex model or simulation system from simpler component models as well as to promote the reuse of the component models. Several different types of software frameworks for model composition have been designed and implemented; those types include common library, product line architecture, interoperability protocol, object model, formal, and integrative environment. The various framework types have different components, processes for composing models, and intended applications. In this survey the fundamental terms and concepts of software frameworks for model composition are presented, the different types of such frameworks are explained and compared, and important examples of each type are described.

1 Abstract: This paper presents a tutorial on Model-Based Software Engineering (MBSE) as a systematic approach for software reuse. The use of models in MBSE differs from reuse approaches based on libraries which do not define how the components are structured, how they interoperate, and how they are combined to deliver a given functionality. MBSE offers an approach for systematic reuse by defining the required capabilities of a class of applications, or domains. It supports a trade-off decision process for design and implementation similar to that practiced in other engineering disciplines. Software modeling under MBSE is a key factor in successful reuse and is demonstrated in several case studies presented in this paper. The paper concludes by discussing the products necessary for successful transition of the MBSE technology.1

Models for domains and architectures - A prescription for systematic software reuse

In this paper, aiming at the modeling requirements of communication system model in military combat simulation, the characteristics and granularity of each communication model represented by analysis and simulation are briefly de-scribed, and a three-layer pseudo multi-resolution communication model architecture based on message consistency is proposed. Some of the main communication models were designed in detail, and the simulation application scenario assembly instructions were carried out with the designed communication model. The results show that the designed communication model can meet the requirements of the multi-resolution communication model in the current combat simulation field. Through the precise design of the framework and model, it can solve the complexity presented when maintaining data consistency, and make up for the cost of model calculation.

The Joint Modeling and Simulation System (J-MASS) is developing an architecture which will enhance the modeling and simulation (M&S) capability of the Department of Defense (DoD) community. The development standards and software tools implemented by J-MASS supports a disciplined approach to the development, configuration, operation, and analysis of digital models and simulations. J-MASS is an object-based modeling system designed to enhance supportability and maintainability. J-MASS will provide a library of verified and validated software components and models of weapon systems developed by the RDT&E community, models of threat systems developed by the intelligence community, and models of environmental effects provided by the scientific community. Because the models developed under J-MASS will have software components that are designed to consistent standards, the components can be reused to rapidly build other models and simulations. This ability to readily access and reuse existing models and components will result in large savings to the DoD in an era of shrinking budgets. J-MASS will truly provide the DoD with a common modeling architecture.
