TL;DR: The authors provide an overview of Regression Discontinuity (RD) designs for social science researchers, explaining when RD is likely to be valid or invalid, drawing a parallel between RD and randomized experiments, and summarizes different ways of estimating a treatment effect in the presence of a RD design.
Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of Regression Discontinuity (RD) designs for social science researchers. It presents the conceptual framework behind the research design, explains when RD is likely to be valid or invalid, draws a parallel between RD and randomized experiments, and summarizes different ways of estimating a treatment effect in the presence of a RD design. Implementation issues are discussed in the context of an example from U.S. House elections (Lee (2008)).
