A method for analyzing reservoir fluids in connection with a drilling operation includes determining composition and isotopes of injection fluids injected into a wellbore during a drilling operation and production fluids recovered from the wellbore during the drilling operation. Reservoir fluids from a reservoir intersected by the wellbore are characterized based on the composition and isotopes of the injection fluid and of the production fluid.

Method and system for reservoir characterization in connection with drilling operations

A novel method, system and tool for performing formation and well evaluation while drilling are disclosed. These inventions determine the properties of a particular formation (F) within a reservoir as the reservoir is being intersected during well construction. In one form of the invention, the formation evaluation is made using a direct measurement of the formation's ability to flow fluids. The flow potential of a reservoir during underbalanced well construction is determined as the well is being constructed. The methods produce an understanding of the volumes and types of the fluids such as oil, gas, and/or water, that can be produced out of discrete sections of a formation within a reservoir as the reservoir is intersected. The trajectory and path of the wellbore through the reservoir are modified to intersect formation having more desirable permeability and productivity to decrease the time to market of the hydrocarbon reserves within a reservoir without the time delay inherent when conventional formation evaluation techniques are applied. A downhole flow measurement instrument (27) is used to obtain actual flow ratios. The instrument is integrated into a near-bit stabilizer (12) and can be used for early kick and benign 'breathing' fractures detection in the open hole wellbore.

Method, system and tool for reservoir evaluation and well testing during drilling operations

The present invention provides a heater cable (10) that may be deployed in a wellbore to elevate the temperature of the wellbore above the temperature of the surrounding fluid and the formation. One or more fiber optic strings are included in or are carried by the heater cable. The heater cable carrying the fiber optics is placed along the desired length of the wellbore. At least one fiber optic string measures temperature of the heater cable at a plurality of spaced apart locations. Another string may be utilized to determine the temperature of the wellbore. In one aspect of this invention, the heater cable is heated above the temperature of the wellbore. The fluid flowing from the formation to the wellbore lowers the temperature of the cable at the inflow locations. The fiber optic string provides measurements of the temperature along the heater cable. The fluid flow is determined from the temperature profile of the heater cable provided by the fiber optic sensors.

Method of using a heater with a fiber optic string in a wellbore

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for measuring a property of a subsurface formation intersected by a wellbore, which contemplate the use of a tool body adapted for movement through the wellbore. Actuating means is carried by the tool body, and a probe is propelled by the actuating means for movement of the probe between a retracted position within the wellbore and an extended position penetrating a wall of the wellbore such that the probe engages the formation. The probe is adapted for substantially producing a seal at the wall of the wellbore as the probe is moved to the extended position, and the probe has means therein for measuring the property of the formation engaged by the probe.

A method and device are provided for monitoring the interfaces between and other physical characteristics of fluids in the pore spaces of an underground formation. The device includes a sleeve around which, when in use, an annular measuring chamber is formed which is in fluid communication with the pore spaces of the surrounding formation but which is hydraulically isolated from other parts of the wellbore of a production or other well in which the device is mounted. An array of capacitor or other sensors is mounted in the measuring chamber for measuring the interfaces between, or other physical characteristics of, the fluids in the measuring chamber.

Downhole monitoring method and device

In a borehole logging tool, a hot wire anemometer measures fluid flow entering or exiting the borehole (16) at the wall of the borehole. The logging tool has open aperture sensing pads (14, 15) mounted onto arms (12, 13) placed in mechanical contact with the wall that place the sensor pads at the wall surface. The sensor pads have an open aperture across their central area to permit fluid flow therethrough in such a manner that provides minimum disruption of flow between the borehole and the surrounding earth formations about the borehole being logged. Other sensors mounted on the sensor pad measure parameters such as fluid type, flowrate or fluid flow direction, as well as fluid properties including capacitance, dielectric constant and temperature of the passing fluid; or contain a shield attached at the end of the sensor pad upstream of the fluid flowing in the borehole center so as to minimize effects from fluids flowing in the center of the borehole.
