Propulsion system development requires new, more affordable manufacturing techniques and technologies in a constrained budget environment, while future in-space applications will require in-space manufacturing and assembly of parts and systems. Marshall is advancing cuttingedge commercial capabilities in additive and digital manufacturing and applying them to aerospace challenges. The Center is developing the standards by which new manufacturing processes and parts will be tested and qualified. Rapidly evolving digital tools, such as additive manufacturing, are the leading edge of a revolution in the design and manufacture of space systems that enables rapid prototyping and reduces production times. Marshall has unique expertise in leveraging new digital tools, 3D printing, and other advanced manufacturing technologies and applying them to propulsion systems design and other aerospace materials to meet NASA mission and industry needs. Marshall is helping establish the standards and qualifications “from art to part” for the use of these advanced techniques and the parts produced using them in aerospace or elsewhere in the U.S. industrial base.

Additive manufacturing

With prevalent attacks in communication, sharing a secret between communicating parties is an ongoing challenge. Moreover, it is important to integrate quantum solutions with classical secret sharing schemes with low computational cost for the real world use. This paper proposes a novel hybrid threshold adaptable quantum secret sharing scheme, using an m-bonacci orbital angular momentum (OAM) pump, Lagrange interpolation polynomials, and reverse Huffman-Fibonacci-tree coding. To be exact, we employ entangled states prepared by m -bonacci sequences to detect eavesdropping. Meanwhile, we encode m -bonacci sequences in Lagrange interpolation polynomials to generate the shares of a secret with reverse Huffman-Fibonacci-tree coding. The advantages of the proposed scheme is that it can detect eavesdropping without joint quantum operations, and permits secret sharing for an arbitrary but no less than threshold-value number of classical participants with much lower bandwidth. Also, in comparison with existing quantum secret sharing schemes, it still works when there are dynamic changes, such as the unavailability of some quantum channel, the arrival of new participants and the departure of participants. Finally, we provide security analysis of the new hybrid quantum secret sharing scheme and discuss its useful features for modern applications.

Controlled release micronutrient fertilizers for precision agriculture - A review.

Nutrient fertilization plays a key role in maintaining soil fertility and improving crop yield and quality. Demographic growth and, consequently, increased demand for food requires intensification of agricultural production. Traditional fertilizers (mineral, organic, chelate fertilizers) contribute to soil, groundwater, and air pollution (mainly nitrogen oxides). The basis of the new trend of precision agriculture is smart fertilizers. These types of products are characterized by a controlled and slow release of nutrients. In this paper, four groups of innovative smart fertilizers were characterized: hydrogel, capsule, and nanofertilizer. Despite structural differences, all groups show a controlled release of microelements. The paper presents the advantages and disadvantages of innovative fertilizer preparations. 

Smart fertilizers—toward implementation in practice

The aim of this study was to develop a method for removing phosphate from an aqueous solution using iron (III) chloride-modified eggshells. The physicochemical properties of the modified biomass (FTIR, pHPZC) were examined. The sorption capacity of the modified sorbents was tested. The kinetic rate constant was determined using the general model and equals 1.82 10−10 min−1. The maximum sorption capacity of modified eggshells was determined using the Langmuir model (Qmax = 42.3 mg g−1). Kinetic experiments were also carried out in a fixed-bed column. To establish the adsorption parameters in the bed column, the Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and MDR models were used to describe the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity in the column was 58.4 mg g−1. Based on the result, modified eggshells could be used in the future as an effective sorbent for removing phosphate ions from aqueous solutions.

Soil fertilization with fertilizer granules is the most widespread method of plant nutrition. This chapter describes the technical aspects of the granulation process—granule growth methods and granulation techniques. In addition, it presents the advantages and disadvantages of using granulated fertilizers compared to foliar fertilization. Despite several weaknesses, soil fertilization is a rational way to support agricultural production. The predominance over foliar application results in lower influence of weather conditions on the application, introduction of larger amounts of nutrients during one application, possibility of precise nutrition through controlled release fertilizers, no storage and application problems. In turn, adopting a holistic approach to fertilization strategy reduces nutrient losses by increasing uptake by plants. However, this requires an understanding of the relationship between soil and plant. Important is an increase in public awareness on precision farming that is compatible with sustainable development and environmental safety. 

Granulation as the method of rational fertilizer application

The alarming amount of waste generated is an environmental and social problem worldwide. The current economy model in line with the “take-make-waste” approach should be changed into a circular economy. The closed cycle of materials and energy creates the possibility of recycling waste. Innovative solutions should be introduced in the agrifood sector due to the largest amounts of generated waste and the negative impact of mineral fertilizers on the ecosystem. Biowaste, including animal waste, food and crop waste, sewage sludge, is a source of valuable nutrients. If treated properly, they can potentially be used to produce agrochemicals. They positively affect crops by improving soil conditions and satisfying the nutritional needs of plants in intensified agricultural production. However, the presence of pollutants (pathogens, heavy metals) makes it difficult to valorize wastes for agricultural applications. The aim of the work was to present the production of agrochemicals following the concept of the circular economy. The problem of generated waste has been discussed in detail. The benefits and limitations related to the transition of the economy model from linear to a closed-loop were also presented.
