A thermal barrier coating system for high temperature superalloys includes an intermetallic bond coating on the substrate and a ceramic topcoat having a columnar grain structure with the columnar axis perpendicular to the surface of the coating. The intermetallic coating is preferably a nickel aluminide or a platinum aluminide, whose upper surface is oxidized during processing to form a thin layer of predominantly aluminum oxide. The ceramic topcoat is preferably zirconium oxide having from about 6 to 20 percent yttrium oxide.

An erosion and corrosion resistant coating is formed of a plurality of alternating layers of metallic and ceramic materials. The two materials selected for the layers have complementary wear resistant characteristics, such that one is relatively ductile and the other is relatively brittle. The concentration of the two materials at the interface between adjacent layers is graded to improve the adhesion of the layers and to provide a more unified coating. Preferably radio-frequency sputtering is employed to deposit the coating, since it does not produce excessive heating which could negate any prior heat treatment of the substrate onto which the coating is deposited.

Multi-layer wear resistant coatings

A method of applying a protective coating to a touch screen panel. A coating material which cures at an elevated temperature is applied to a touch screen panel on at least one surface thereof. The panel is then heated to a temperature which does not adversely affect the panel by irradiating the panel imparting energy to the coating material to more fully cure the coating material in a shorter time period without damaging the panel.

Method of applying a protective coating to a touch screen panel

A method for coating and an associated assembly including such a coating are provided. The assembly includes a workpiece defining a weld portion, such as a friction weld joint and a heat affected zone. A coating is disposed on the weld portion to at least partially cover the weld portion, thereby providing enhanced corrosion resistance to the workpiece.

Aluminum coating for the corrosion protection of welds

An article is provided with improved resistance to hot corrosion through a coating on a metal surface based on an element selected from Fe, Co and Ni, the coating comprising a filled matrix bonded by interdiffusion with the substrate. The matrix is applied by impinging on the substrate metal surface a plurality of heated metallic particles, such as by plasma spraying. The coating includes a filler metal of aluminum and preferably an alloy of aluminum and at least one other element, for example Cr, deposited on and interdiffused with the matrix, such as through a halide vapor deposition process employing a mixture of aluminum powder and other powders. As a result of application of the filler metal, there is provided from the matrix a coating layer of an alloy including an average of about 8-20 weight percent aluminum, the application process resulting in substantial recrystallization of the matrix.

Coated article and method and material of coating

Ferrous metal articles, such as stainless steel articles, characterized by at least one brazed joint, in which the braze is a non-ferrous alloy are aluminized by first selectively coating the braze alloy with an aluminide-forming metal, such as nickel, and then thermally diffusing aluminum over the entire surface of the article including the selectively coated braze, such that a sacrificial corrosion resistant coating is produced wherein the aluminum coating on the ferrous metal surface is characterized by the presence of iron aluminide, and wherein the aluminum coating on the metal-coated braze is characterized by the presence of metal aluminide, such as nickel aluminide. The aluminide coatings are further enhanced by the application of a non-metallic coating, e.g., a conversion coating.

Corrosion resistant coating system for ferrous metal articles having brazed joints

Prodn. of a thermally diffused corrosion protecting aluminised layer on stainless steel components with brazed joints where the braze material is a non-ferrous alloy at m.pt. 607-1052 degrees C and esp. an alloy based on Cu, Ag, or Au, with m.pt. 635-1010 degrees C, involves protecting the braze from excessive Al penetration by selectively plating it with a 0.005 mm layer of Ni. Selective plating is achieved by chemically depositing Hg on the braze, immersing in aq. HNO3 or CrO3 to remove Hg and passivate the steel, followed by electroless Ni plating which deposits only on the braze. After aluminizing, corrosion protection is further improved with one or more silicate coatings opt. followed by chromate/phosphate treatment. Used for mfg. components, e.g. for turbines, which draw in air and operate in marine conditions. Weakening of brazed joints by excessive penetration of Al is prevented.
