Nanobiotechnology has grown rapidly and become an integral part of modern disease diagnosis and treatment. Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a class of eco-friendly, cost-effective and biocompatible agents that have attracted attention for their possible biomedical and bioengineering applications. Like many other inorganic and organic nanoparticles, such as AuNPs, iron oxide and quantum dots, AgNPs have also been widely studied as components of advanced anticancer agents in order to better manage cancer in the clinic. AgNPs are typically produced by the action of reducing reagents on silver ions. In addition to numerous laboratory-based methods for reduction of silver ions, living organisms and natural products can be effective and superior source for synthesis of AgNPs precursors. Currently, plants, bacteria and fungi can afford biogenic AgNPs precursors with diverse geometries and surface properties. In this review, we summarized the recent progress and achievements in biogenic AgNPs synthesis and their potential uses as anticancer agents.

Colloidal inorganic nanoparticles have wide applications in the detection of analytes and in biological assays. A large number of these assays rely on the ability of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, in the 20 nm diameter size range) to undergo a color change from red to blue upon aggregation. AuNP assays can be based on cross-linking, non-cross linking or unmodified charge-based aggregation. Nucleic acid-based probes, monoclonal antibodies, and molecular-affinity agents can be attached by covalent or non-covalent means. Surface plasmon resonance and SERS techniques can be utilized. Silver NPs also have attractive optical properties (higher extinction coefficient). Combinations of AuNPs and AgNPs in nanocomposites can have additional advantages. Magnetic NPs and ZnO, TiO2 and ZnS as well as insulator NPs including SiO2 can be employed in colorimetric assays, and some can act as peroxidase mimics in catalytic applications. This review covers the synthesis and stabilization of inorganic NPs and their diverse applications in colorimetric and optical assays for analytes related to environmental contamination (metal ions and pesticides), and for early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, using medically important biomarkers.

Optical Assays Based On Colloidal Inorganic Nanoparticles

In this work, we report a simple and facile one-pot chemical approach of the decoration of uniform zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on reduced graphene oxide (GO) and a study of its antimicrobial activity. The nanocomposite was fully characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). TEM and SEM images clearly indicated the presence of Graphene sheets decorated with uniformly sized zinc oxide nanoparticles. Further, as an application of rGO-ZnO nanocomposites, their superior antibacterial activity was demonstrated on the Escherichia coli MTCC40 bacterial strain, using the standard disk diffusion method. This clearly showed that rGO-ZnO nanocomposites exhibited more pronounced antibacterial activity than rGO alone. This feature was revealed to be due to increased biocompatibility of PEGylated rGO-ZnO nanocomposites. In conclusion, the as-synthesized nanocomposite showed excellent antibacterial activity and has great potential for biomedical application.

Green Synthesis of AgNPs Stabilized with biowaste and their antimicrobial activities.

Sol- gel synthesis of Ga2O3 nanorods and effect of precursor chemistry on their structural and morphological properties

Nanocrystalline cubic zirconia particles were synthesized from [Zr{OPri}4] (A), [Zr{OPri}3{ONC9H6}] (1) and [Zr{OPri}2{ONC9H6}2] (2) {where, ONC9H6 = 8-hydroxyquinoline}. Formation of all the precursors was confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR and NMR (1H and 13C). The thermal stability of complexes (1) and (2) has been studied by thermal gravimetric analysis. Zirconia samples (a), (b), and (c) were formed by aqueous sol–gel transformations of (A), (1) and (2), respectively. All the oxide samples were characterized for its phase, crystallite size, and strain present by XRD and TEM. Surface morphologies of all the samples were investigated by SEM. Selected area diffraction (SAED) of (b) and (c) was done to confirm the results of XRD. The absorption spectra of oxide samples, (a), (b), and (c) show energy band gap of 3.17, 4.10, and 4.13 eV, respectively.
