Supersizing The Mind Embodiment Action And Cognitive Extension Andy Clark

This article focuses on new knowledge perspectives proposed by research on onstage practice within the performing arts. It is based on the notion of the laboratory as a backbone, methodological framework, and place for exploring research-creation projects. Our study offers critical reflections on research procedures, taking the actor’s creative process as our object of study. We go on to establish a connection between theoretical dimensions and practical expressions, through analysis of two research projects that confront performance practice with its underlying scientific premises. Lastly, different modes for publishing and disseminating the results of research on onstage practice are discussed.

The Laboratory as a Site for Research on Acting: relationships between art and science

Mental well-being is a significant resource for athletes about their success and growth. Athletes are now facing additional risk factors in mental health in the sporting community, such as heavy workout loads, rough races, and demanding lifestyles. The great difficulty is to diagnose conditions and acquire sport and exercise features that contribute to daily or long-term practice to detrimental emotional reactions. In this paper, the sports activity session monitoring system (SASMS) has been proposed using wearable devices and EEG signal by monitoring the sports person’s heart rate and psychological behaviour. The proposed SASMS mental-health analysis focused on model spectrum forms representing the best results, mental illness, and mental health. The paper’s key conclusions concerned with the athletes’ performance, occupational and personal advancement of athletes in mental health problems, strategies intended to track and sustain athletes’ mental health, and outflow of different mental illness types. This research’s findings provide the basis for implementing actions that promote a healthy emotional state in the sport to enhance activity and fitness.

ABSTRACT Garrett Hardin’s The Tragedy of the Commons is a classic piece of academic literature in geography and cognate fields. Applying theories of embodied cognition and performance pedagogies, this paper presents a classroom-based activity that can be used to teach the concepts of The Tragedy of the Commons in a way that will likely intersect with students’ own lived experiences more meaningfully than Hardin’s central example of a group of livestock owners making use of a shared field for grazing. The activity involves a dialogue among five student volunteer actors that iteratively portrays a group of friends trying to negotiate their own advantages alongside a sense of equity in the context of dividing the cost of a shared meal. During and after the performance, key opportunities are presented for the instructor to lead a discussion about Hardin’s “tragedy” as well as the solutions he proposes by which it might be overcome. The model of scripted performance plus impromptu discussion used here can be applied to the teaching of other complex topics in the geography classroom.

Teaching The Tragedy of the Commons through an Iterative, Performance-based, Embodied Cognition Pedagogy

Resumen: Desde el nacimiento del Odin Teatret, Eugenio Barba tuvo presente la indagacion en las tecnicas del actor y en su entrenamiento continuo para alcanzar el nivel optimo de presencia escenica. Fruto de dicho interes, surgio en 1979 la International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA), dando lugar a la Antropologia Teatral como nueva disciplina para el estudio de los fundamentos de la actuacion. En el presente articulo se plantea el analisis de los enfoques metodologicos desarrollados por la Antropologia Teatral a lo largo de estos 40 anos y sus posibles conexiones con otros campos del saber cientifico, destacando sus aplicaciones historiograficas, etnoescenologicas y neurocientificas, para el estudio de los principios pre-expresivos del actor y las estrategias dramaturgicas que configuran su bios escenico.

In this collection of chapters, the four branches of radical cognitive science—embodied, embedded, enactive and ecological—dialogue with performance, with particular focus on post-cognitivist approaches to understanding the embodied mind-in-society; deemphasising the computational and representational metaphors; and embracing new conceptualisations grounded on the dynamic interactions of 'brain, body and world'. In our collection, radical cognitive science reaches out to areas of scholarship also explored in the fields of performance practice and training as we facilitate a new inter- and transdisciplinary discourse in which to jointly share and explore common reactions of embodied approaches to the lived mind.

Preface to the special issue: embodied cognition, acting and performance

Thirty years ago this provocation would not have been written. Embodiment has grown rapidly throughout the course of the past three decades into a relevant and challenging concept intersecting a range of disciplines and research programmes responding to its development. This provocation explores select theories of embodiment from the embodied cognition research programme as well as some practical processes and conceptual applications of embodiment from the field of actor training and actor-based performance training. I am largely responding to the work presented at the Embodied Cognition, Acting and Performance Symposium for which this Special Edition of Connection Science is an outcome. The articulations of the term embodiment currently inform two separate disciplinary understandings of this concept. Here, I highlight a move towards cross-disciplinary approaches to the concept of embodiment and offer an integrative new articulation of the term, bridging received divided between these two distinct and ever developing fields. This provocation argues that embodiment offers a valuable and challenging dimension to our emerging interdisciplinary discourse and that embodied processes are central to the ongoing integration of these two disciplines. This focus on our ongoing interdisciplinary strategies subsequently invites the proposition that embodiment, as an issue of central importance to both disciplinary spheres, may indeed be the key to any future transdisciplinary developments in research and practice occurring between the distinct fields of embodied cognition and performance practice.
