Seeking Spatial Justice

Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical, and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problem for the next half-century. A portfolio of technologies now exists to meet the world's energy needs over the next 50 years and limit atmospheric CO2 to a trajectory that avoids a doubling of the preindustrial concentration. Every element in this portfolio has passed beyond the laboratory bench and demonstration project; many are already implemented somewhere at full industrial scale. Although no element is a credible candidate for doing the entire job (or even half the job) by itself, the portfolio as a whole is large enough that not every element has to be used.

The greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation options for materials used in UK construction

The operational phase of a building project has increasingly gained importance with their energy performance becoming valuable and determining their operational excellence. In most heritage building projects (HBPs), the operational energy use aspects are less considered, and a systematic way of analyzing their energy performance following project delivery is often lacking. The aim of this study is to evaluate the operational performance of refurbishment and reuse of UK listed church projects. The objective is to assess the operational energy use with a view to optimizing their sustainable performance. The methodology includes eight selected case study buildings refurbished and converted for multipurpose use. The case study approach provided qualitative insights into how the study contributes to a more structured requirements for energy management in HBPs with specific attention to energy-efficient building operations. The findings show the need to focus on fundamental areas of operational management (i.e. by developing and implementing more focused policy on operational energy performance of heritage buildings) to minimize the energy required to operate them. The challenges of implementing changes in operational energy performance improvement of heritage buildings are addressed in the form of recommendations that could lead to real results. The study concludes that leveraging these areas requires commitment from all heritage building stakeholders because they all have substantial roles in harmonizing the requirement for the project׳s sustainability and not just the building operators. Meanwhile, baseline project planning, periodic updating, monitoring, and managing the energy use pattern are suggested as measures that could greatly facilitate better energy performance to optimizing their sustainable reuse compared with the traditional approach of trying to improve their thermal performance.

Performance evaluation of operational energy use in refurbishment, reuse, and conservation of heritage buildings for optimum sustainability

There is a wide consensus that buildings, as major energy consumers and sources of greenhouse gas emissions must play an important role in mitigating climate change. This has led to increasing concern and greater demand to improve energy effi ciency in buildings. Although, there has been increased efforts to reduce energy consumption from existing building stock; the heritage sector still needs to accelerate its efforts to improve energy effi ciency and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Presently, much concentration has been on improving the energy effi ciency of heritage buildings in the domestic sector while, the non-domestic sector has only received little attention. In particular, studies focusing on reuse and adaptation of heritage buildings for public use to achieve more effi cient use of energy are urgently required. The main focus of this paper is the need for research into sustainable reuse of public heritage buildings with reference to maximising energy effi ciency in the process of considering their conversion to other uses. The paper presents part of a broader on-going research with the aim to investigate problems associated with maximising energy effi ciency in reuse and conversion of public heritage buildings. It identifi es the ability of heritage buildings to play a role in global reduction of energy use and CO 2 emission whilst maintaining its unique characteristics. Issues and challenges associated to improving energy effi ciency in heritage building conversion projects were discussed. Holistic approach through identifi cation of various options and innovative techniques for their sustainable reuse were suggested. The paper concluded that in spite of the exemption of listed buildings from energy performance requirements, these buildings can still accommodate some energy effi ciency improvements. However, further studies to identify the most suitable options for long term sustainability is required if the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 is to be achieved.

Energy efficiency for sustainable reuse of public heritage buildings: the case for research

'Regeneration of place that has socially just outcomes' is taken as the broad definition of 'spatial justice' in this position paper, based on a longitudinal case study of North Kensington from 1976 to 2012.The research topic of 'spatial justice in planning theory and regeneration practice' follows the researcher's experience over three decades as a regeneration practitioner in south-eastern England and London. The component of 'digitality' is contained within the three measures proposed to account for spatial justice: spatial relations within an urban setting, longitudinal socio-economic comparisons in an area, and the level of intra-urban/regional governance applied in the case study area.These measures will aid the identification of principles and basic institutions of governance which, if applied, would support improved 'spatial justice' outcomes in large-scale regeneration programmes. By focusing on the impact of digital technologies on urban geographies, this paper seeks to spotlight assumed values and underlying principles for spatial justice. While digitality makes many positive contributions to reductions in inequality (more accessible resources, better services, more freely available information), some aspects of digitalization can give cause for concern, often in the area of values and ethics, the most prominent being privacy issues.The analysis of the concept of spatial justice may help to uncover how established values might be maintained, if indeed these values are those that our liberal-democratic society wishes to perpetuate, and may serve to highlight positive prospects for increasing the democratization of space through the application of new digital technologies.

Knowing Our Future: The Startling Case for Futurology

Public heritage buildings (PHBs) were evaluated with the aim to determine their operational energy
performance and the objectives of identifying improvement potentials for their long term
sustainable reuse. Six listed churches initially used for worship and later converted to community
uses were selected and surveyed as case study buildings using purposive sampling technique. A
qualitative analytical approach based on ranking the performance of the surveyed building’s energy
consumption assessment compared to others within the same geographical region was adopted.
Findings show that a greater number of the surveyed buildings are low-performing with their
energy use being exacerbated by the combination and interplay of multiple factors such as building
use pattern, efficiency of services and lighting etc. Results of the findings imply that potential and
identifiable prospects for efficiency improvements and CO2 emissions reduction exists within the
operation of the buildings. Recommended actions for wide-scale improvements in the form of
capital replacement, retrofit/refurbishment, behavioural and improved operational management and
control were suggested. The study concluded wider opportunities towards achieving energy saving
such as energy management programme, building energy refurbishment scheme and use of
energy efficient equipment could enhance stainable reuse of PHBs.
