TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the shearing behavior of the Mindlin plate and the degenerated shell element in flat element applications with respect to shear locking, and found that the shear-locking phenomenon is strictly associated with the flexural behaviour of the element and directly or indirectly with the development of spurious shear strain by the element.
