The study analyses how remittances to Nigeria affect the labour supply of recipients using Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and a Log-Linear regression model, with data from the 2013 Nigerian General Household Survey. The PSM results show that for the entire sample, the difference between the average amount of labour supplied per week by those that receive remittances and the amount they would have supplied without remittances is insignificant. The marginal impact analysis also shows that, ceteris paribus, the average labour supply for all recipients is inelastic to remittances. The results from the sub-group analysis, however, show that receiving remittances negatively affects the labour supply of the self-employed in agriculture, teenagers and the elderly. These results led us to the recommendation that policies to increase the inflow of remittances should be encouraged but in tandem with programmes to educate farmers on the benefit of investing remittances received in their farming business.

International Migrant Remittances and Labour Supply in Nigeria

Cultural and traditional beliefs that determine husband’s willingness to permit their spouse work are predominant in rural areas and this motivated the study to investigate the determinants of labour force separately in urban and rural sectors of Nigeria. The study employed the logistic regression on a house hold survey data of employment and discovered that the determinants of female labour participation were not the same in urban and rural areas. The results suggested that marital status, religion, poverty rate and per capita income were significant determinants in the rural sector, while age and literacy rate were the significant determinants in the urban sector. Since the determinants in the urban and rural regions were completely different, the study recommends that, discriminate policies be encouraged when designing measures to improve female labour participation. This paper principally analysed the importance of domestic debt on economic growth of Nigeria The objective of the study is to investigate the relationship between government domestic debt and economic growth and policy that is likely to improve private sector investment and break growth resistance problem To empirically determine the relationship between domestic debt and some macroeconomic variables, we employed the error correction model procedures following an examination of properties of the time series using unit root and co-integration test Findings show that domestic debt and credit have a significant and direct relationship with GDP and that debt servicing has inverse relationship with GDP and also government expenditure has a direct but not significant relationship with GDP The implication of the findings concludes that domestic debt should be invested in productive sector of the economy and more specifically in the real sector and further productivity gain will be achieved in the improvement on capital project expenditure KEYWORDS: Domestic debt, credit, servicing, investment and economic growth
