Por uma lingüística crítica: linguagem, identidade e questão ética

This paper is about the need to rethink the English language teaching in higher education. The objective is to show how the difficulty to learn this language may be diagnosed through educational research. Under the light of Applied Linguistics and Critical Pedagogy, it develops reasoning to understand that the offer of the English language per se, with the mere presumption of inclusion, may not bring the desired results. To offer the English language it is necessary to plan it, taking into account the logistic factors. When they are disregarded, learners react with negative attitudes, which may hinder learning. This, somehow, signals the need of language politics which redirect the English teaching/learning logistic. This paper aims at making a reflection in this sense, presenting outcomes of an ethnographic research, developed with some undergraduate students, in Brazil, whose data showed negative attitudes toward some logistic factors, in the English language classroom. Thus, this text is aligned with the tenets of language politics, taking into account the logistic factors to reach better results in the English language classroom. \n

The Need of language politics for the teaching of English in higher education in Brazil

Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma tese de doutorado, situada na area da Linguistica Aplicada (LA), cujo principal objetivo foi averiguar se a composicao curricular dos cursos de formacao de professores de italiano no Brasil possibilita uma formacao docente critica e reflexiva em conformidade com a perspectiva intercultural. Portanto, trata-se de uma pesquisa documental, sob o enfoque qualitativo-interpretativista, realizada nas grades curriculares, nas ementas e dos conteudos programaticos das disciplinas dos cursos de Licenciatura em lingua italiana de algumas universidades brasileiras. Os resultados demonstraram a necessidade da construcao de novas praticas pedagogicas que possibilitem formar professores de italiano criticos, reflexivos e capazes de atuarem em diferentes contextos educacionais, visando  a promocao da  Interculturalidade  e  a formacao cidada de seus alunos.

Currículo e formação de professores de línguas: por uma perspectiva intercultural

This paper is about some Brazilian undergraduate students’ attitudes and beliefs. Thus, it presents some data of a qualitative study, whose objective was to verify the existence of a relationship between ‘attitude’ and ‘belief’. The data emerged from a questionnaire applied with 91 undergraduate students, from a Brazilian university, who studied English compulsorily. To support the study, some categories of analysis were elaborated: 1. Attitudes hold or integrate beliefs and 2. Beliefs emerge as a justification of an attitude. The data analysis pointed the existence of an intrinsic relationship between attitude and belief. The relevance of this study lies in the need to understand this issue even more, since as far as one is concerned, until now, only few researches have proposed to reflect on this relationship as well as the understanding of this relationship can contribute to the improvement of the teaching/learning of English.

A perspectiva intercultural para o ensino de línguas: propostas e desafios (the intercultural perspective to language teaching: proposals and challenges)

O presente artigo versa sobre as atitudes de quarenta e dois alunos em relacao a aprendizagem da lingua inglesa. Para tanto, sao delineados fatores que estao intimamente relacionados as atitudes, tais como orientacao, motivacao, desmotivacao, ideologia e resistencia. Este trabalho, desenvolvido a luz da linguistica aplicada, tem carater interdisciplinar, e por isso esta ancorado nas concepcoes sobre o tema, encontradas na psicologia social. Os dados apresentados aqui foram obtidos atraves de uma pesquisa etnografica sobre atitudes, desenvolvida em duas escolas publicas, na regiao do Reconcavo Baiano por Anjos (2013). Foram utilizados tres instrumentos de geracao de dados: um questionario, uma entrevista e observacao de aulas. Os resultados apontaram alto grau de atitudes positivas para aprender ingles e de orientacao instrumental. Entretanto, alguns estudantes pesquisados sinalizaram atitudes negativas. Os resultados sao discutidos na parte final do artigo com a apresentacao de dados qualitativos e quantitativos.

Mapeando Atitudes, (Des) Motivação e Orientação para Aprender Inglês

This paper is about teachers’ attitudes. We understand ‘attitudes’ as an evaluative reaction, based on opinions and beliefs one might have. Our objective is to share some data of a qualitative research we conducted with some high school teachers of English, in Brazil. Therefore, we used two instruments of data collection: a questionnaire and an interview. It is an interdisciplinary study, developed under the light of applied linguistics, because upon problematizing social issues related with language, we resorted to social psychology, discourse analysis and critical pedagogy to understand the data. This research is justified because there is still the need to investigate teachers’ attitudes, since there has been a great amount of researches on attitudes based mostly on learners, what points to a gap that still needs to be filled. The analysis pointed to some attitudes, such as toward the Self, the language, the methodology, the approach, the logistic factors and to the learners.
