Eco-efficiency change in power plants: using a slacks-based measure for the meta-frontier Malmquist–Luenberger productivity index

To date, more than half of the output in the major OECD countries has been knowledge based. This paper argues, however, that the current growth-oriented exposition of the knowledge economy rooted in the conventional concept of free competition is insufficient for promoting the long-term development of human societies. Although we now live in a knowledge economy, most countries have been concurrently characterized by serious phenomena such as environmental degradation and growing economic inequality. The prospect of meeting global commitments, for instance, to reducing inequality, as outlined in the 1995 World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen and endorsed in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, is bleak and the global society as a whole has become less and less sustainable. Indeed, the world is better seen as composed of numerous (but finite) knowledge economies. To take up the challenge of sustainable development of human societies, we have to develop a pluralistic perspective of the knowledge economy and fully acknowledge the characteristics of each unique knowledge system (such as indigenous knowledge possessed by a small tribe). Once we can help each individual knowledge system develop into a specific set of economic institutions that freely exchange concepts and beliefs with each other in a global environment, we will be able to develop a global economy that embodies a value-committed basis that assures a sustainable path of development on earth.

This article delivers current basic understanding on the concept and issues of green entrepreneurship in Vietnam and its association with related background concepts such as social entrepreneurship, social responsibility, and sustainable development The results of analysis show that the development and implementation of this concept/idea serves the urgent needs of people living in world’s megacities Green entrepreneurship’s specific mission is to promote sustainable development of both the local community and environment Using conceptual analysis and investigating small firms operating in green sectors of the two largest cities in Vietnam, this article revealed the importance of green entrepreneurship in megacities and the way to popularize it for the purpose of offering a better quality of urban life Finally, the article proposed several recommendations and solutions to enhance green entrepreneurship to support sustainable development and to promote the role it can interplay with other forms of entrepreneurship in Vietnam

Green Entrepreneurship Understanding in Vietnam

This thesis analyses the policy and traditional practice of umuganda, which is a Rwandan word for community work. Many authors have looked at umuganda, mainly focusing on the period from 1973 until the 1994 genocide something which has fostered a lot of negativity regarding the essence and practice of umuganda. Rather than discussing umuganda for a specific period, a wide look at its origins until the present day is more informative. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the nature and the evolution of umuganda in Rwanda, thereby deepening the discussion about its future prospects. The main purpose of the thesis is to investigate how to enhance the efficiency of the policy and practice of umuganda in fostering development and peace in Rwanda. The study focuses on how the practice of umuganda has been understood and implemented throughout the historical period of Rwanda, namely, the pre-colonial, colonial, postcolonial periods until the genocide and then the post-genocide period. The discussion leads to a more detailed empirical study of how the policy is understood and practised in two geographical settings: one urban, in Kigali City, and the other rural, in Western Province. This thesis identifies the major transformation of the philosophy, organisation and purpose of umuganda throughout the four historical periods. It specifically highlights that despite the decentralisation of political and administration structures, the management of umuganda has remained hierarchical. This has resulted in the government takeover of umuganda while local people distance themselves from its practice. The thesis notes that, even though umuganda practice is regarded as beneficial for public and political interest, little benefit is seen for individuals in their communities. This thesis attempts to shed more light on how umuganda could be in harmony with the principles of participation, development and community development. It argues that, even though cultural practises are sometimes seen as backward, transforming umuganda to be managed by local communities could contribute to either a traditional sense of socio-economic well-being or even to modern development strategies. The thesis investigates the potential for the policy and practice of umuganda to empower the poor in the community, thereby helping national development.

An analysis of Umuganda : the policy and practice of community work in Rwanda.

Green economics: An introduction and research agenda, examines the historical evolution of green economics, a discourse which is marked by antipathy to the foundational assumptions of conventional market based economics. Green opposition to growth and the market is identified along with values of ecological sustainability, social justice, decentralisation and peace. To move beyond a critical account, green economics, as a discipline, needs to establish a research agenda based on: 1 examining global political economy 2 developing forms of regulation beyond the market and the state 3 examining the transition to such an alternative economy.
