TL;DR: To develop a design that satisfies the ‘ideals’ of a satisfactory prosthetic, an interdisciplinary team of biomedical and tissue engineers, and biomaterial and biomedical scientists is needed to work together holistically and synergistically.
Abstract: Although among designs of prosthetics there have been some successes in the design of functional robotic implants, there remain many issues and challenges concerned with the failure to meet...

TL;DR: A unified approach for the necessary conditions for optimization of open-loop control systems is developed, starting from the basic principles of calculus of variations, and it is shown that the optimal condition results that are now obtained separately for continuous-time and discrete-time systems can be easily obtained.
Abstract: We develop a unified approach for the necessary conditions for optimization of open-loop control systems, starting from the basic principles of calculus of variations. The unified approach results are simultaneously applicable to both shift (q)-operator-based, discrete-time systems and the derivative (d/dt)-operator-based, continuous-time systems. It is shown that the optimal condition results that are now obtained separately for continuous-time and discrete-time systems can be easily obtained from the unified approach. An illustrative example is given. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
