The maximum power obtained from a solar photovoltaic system varies due to the variation in the atmospheric condition. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller is implemented to track the maximum power with respect to the changes in the weather conditions to efficiently operate the solar Photovoltaic (PV) system. In this paper, a comparative study between different P&O algorithms such as conventional Perturbation & Observation (P&O) MPPT and variable step size Perturb & Observe (VSS P&O) MPPT are presented. The performance study of standalone solar PV system is carried out under various weather conditions with different MPPT controller. DC-DC boost converter is adopted as power conditioning unit.

Variable step size Perturb and observe MPPT algorithm for standalone solar photovoltaic system

A Maximum Power Point Tracking controller for stand alone solar PV power system is presented in this paper. A solar PV power system consists of PV Module, DC-DC boost converter and an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) based MPPT controller is developed in MATLAB/Simulink. The operation of the DC-DC Boost converter in the PV system is controlled by ANFIS MPPT controller. The ANFIS model is trained using randomly selected data obatined for various temperature and irradiation levels. The cell temperature and irradiation level are the input to the controller and the output of the controller is duty cycle. The model is simulated for various weather conditions and the simulation results are obtained. Performance of proposed ANFIS MPPT controller is analysed by comparing its results with the PV systems without MPPT and PV systems with Incremental Conductance MPPT.

Maximum power point tracking system for stand alone solar PV power system using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System

A novel multiple step size Perturb and Observe (P&O) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm for fast changing weather conditions is proposed and discussed in this paper. Unlike the conventional P&O MPPT, the proposed algorithm operates with variable step size values for faster tracking and the algorithm maintains a constant duty cycle value at the maximum power point. The proposed algorithm is developed in MATLAB/Simulink and simulation is carried for various operating conditions. Performance of the proposed MPPT is analyzed by comparing the simulation results with the output of conventional P&O MPPT based system. The proposed MPPT has better tracking performance with improved accuracy and it has no oscillation around the MPP.

Multiple Step Size Perturb and Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking algorithm with Zero Oscillation for Solar PV Applications

Solar energy generation using photovoltaic (PV) systems is remaining as an appropriate solution for the increasing electricity demands. As the output from the solar panel varies with respect to the atmopheric conditions like temperature and irradiance, it is very much essential to obtain the full amount of required power from the solar PV system, which can be accomplished using power converters. There are different maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms to control the duty cycle of the converters, which will be further used for extracting maximum power from PV module. The proposed research work has compared the Perturb and observe method (P&O) and Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) based MPPT techniques using MATLAB/ Simulink models. Results generated under varying atmospheric conditions were analyzed to determine the best strategy among them.

Comparative Analysis of P&O and Fuzzy Logic Controller based MPPT in a Solar cell

Use of renewable energy sources significantly reduces the fuel consumption for electricity generation which in turn trims down the greenhouse gas emissions. The concept of Microgrid and Smart grid has evolved from the deployment of Renewable Energy based power generation plants, their integration into the existing utility grid. Simulation and analysis of a standalone DC Microgrid is presented in this paper. Solar PV (SPV) system is the main source of the grid, battery is used as Energy Storage System (ESS). A simulation model of DC Microgrid is built in MATLAB/Simulink. The designed system is simulated under various input conditions, load variations tostudy and analyze the performance of whole system. The simulation results obtained under different conditions from various stages of the DC microgrid components are presented and discussed.

Design and Simulation of Stand-alone DC Microgrid with Energy Storage System

The output power of Photovoltaic (PV) module/array varies due to the changes in atmospheric conditions and this result in variation of maximum power point (MPP). The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms are used for converter control so as to adjust the operating point the converter circuit to transfer the maximum power to the load. This paper presents the simulation of interleaved boost converter (IBC) with Perturb and Observe (P&O) MPPT for Photovoltaic system. The PV power system with a two phase IBC is analyzed in this work. The converter circuit is connected with the generalized photovoltaic model and simulated for various atmospheric conditions with and without MPPT controller. The model is simulated in MATLAB and the results are generated for various test conditions. The output power of the converter with and without MPPT is compared with the actual output power of the PV module and the results are discussed.
