This study explored the relationships among perceived workplace incivility, stress, burnout, perceived turnover intentions, and perceived level of psychological empowerment among acute care nurses (medical-surgical and critical care) in community and tertiary hospitals through the lens of complexity science. An exploratory study was conducted, and findings demonstrate significant relationships among workplace incivility, stress, burnout, turnover intentions, total years of nursing experience, and RN education levels. Creating targeted retention strategies and policies that will be sensitive to the needs and interests of nurses at high risk for leaving their organizations is imperative for nurse executives.

Exploring and Addressing Faculty-to-Faculty Incivility: A National Perspective and Literature Review

Multidisciplinary care teams exist throughout healthcare systems. In the operating room (OR), effective communication between teams is essential, especially during crisis situations where patient safety can be in acute danger. An often-neglected skillset in educational curriculums is challenging authority. This narrative synthesis aims to explore the literature on challenging authority in the OR environment. A systematic search of Medline, EBM reviews and PsycINFO was conducted using terms related to challenging authority, speaking up, communication, patient safety, gradients and hierarchy. The initial search identified 4822 publications, out of which 31 studies were included. The data synthesis of the included studies was grouped into three distinct categories following a meta-aggregative approach: discussion and review articles, observational or qualitative studies, and studies identifying the role of specific barriers or investigating the effect of educational interventions. Themes emerging from expert beliefs, what reality tells us and what we test are consistent. Hierarchy, organisational culture and education are the most frequently observed and tested themes. Simulation research has been successful in eliciting and confirming the role of specific barriers to speaking up. Barriers and enablers are largely modifiable within institutions however, education regarding the importance of speaking up will need to accompany these modifications for any significant changes to occur.

Challenging authority and speaking up in the operating room environment: a narrative synthesis

BACKGROUND Resilience is a phenomenon known to buffer the negative effects of stress. Resilience is important in the lives of nursing students and nurse educators. METHOD An integrative literature review was conducted to explore the current state of knowledge of resilience in the context of nursing education. Implications from the review findings were deduced for nursing education practice and research. RESULTS Three theoretical papers and 16 empirical reports were included in the review. Three themes emerged from the analysis: (a) Resilience Is Important in Nursing Education, (b) Resilience Is Conceptualized as Either a Trait or a Process, and (c) Resilience Is Related to Protective Factors. CONCLUSION The findings provide data to support interventions to enhance the resilience of nursing students and nurse educators and offer a foundation for further research of resilience in nursing education.
