Primordial black holes (PBHs) generated by gravitational collapse of large primordial overdensities can be a fraction of the observed dark matter. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism to produce a large peak in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) in two-field inflationary models characterized by two stages of inflation based on a large non-canonical kinetic coupling. This mechanism is generic to several two-field inflationary models, due to a temporary tachyonic instability of the isocurvature perturbations at the transition between the two stages of inflation. We numerically compute the primordial perturbations from largest scales to the small scales corresponding to that of PBHs using an extension of BINGO (BI-spectra and Non-Gaussianity Operator). Moreover we numerically compute the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGW) produced by second order scalar perturbations within frequencies ranging from nano-Hz to KHz that covers the observational scales corresponding to Pulsar Timing Arrays, Square Kilometer Array to that of Einstein telescope. We discuss the prospect of its detection by these proposed and upcoming gravitational waves experiments.

Generating PBHs and small-scale GWs in two-field models of inflation

The treatment of first-order phase transitions for standard grand unified theories is shown to break down for models with radiatively induced spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is argued that proper analysis of these transitions which would take place in the early history of the universe can lead to an explanation of the cosmological homogeneity, flatness, and monopole puzzles.

Cosmology for Grand Unified Theories with Radiatively Induced Symmetry Breaking

We identify a characteristic pattern in the scalar-induced stochastic gravitational wave background from particle production during inflation. If particle production is sufficiently efficient, the scalar power spectrum exhibits $\mathcal{O}(1)$ oscillations periodic in $k$, characteristic of a sharp feature, with an exponentially enhanced envelope. We systematically study the properties of the induced spectrum of gravitational waves sourced after inflation and find that this inherits the periodic structure in $k$, resulting in a peak in the gravitational wave energy density spectrum with $\mathcal{O}(10 \%)$ modulations. The frequency of the oscillation in the scalar power spectrum is determined by the scale of the feature during inflation and in turn sets the frequency of modulations in the gravitational wave signal. We present an explicit realisation of this phenomenon in the framework of multifield inflation, in the form of a strong sharp turn in the inflationary trajectory. The resulting stochastic background is potentially detectable in future gravitational wave observatories, and considerations of backreaction and perturbativity can be used to constrain the parameter space from the theoretical side. Our work motivates more extensive research linking primordial features to observable properties of the stochastic background of gravitational waves, and dedicated development in data analysis for their detection.

Oscillations in the stochastic gravitational wave background from sharp features and particle production during inflation

Eleven dimensional supergravity compactified on $T^10$ admits classical solutions describing what is known as billiard cosmology - a dynamics expressible as an abstract (billiard) ball moving in the 10-dimensional root space of the infinite dimensional Lie algebra E10, occasionally bouncing off walls in that space. Unlike finite dimensional Lie algebras, E10 has negative and zero norm roots, in addition to the positive norm roots. The walls above are related to physical fluxes that, in turn, are related to positive norm roots (called real roots) of E10. We propose that zero and negative norm roots, called imaginary roots, are related to physical branes. Adding 'matter' to the billiard cosmology corresponds to adding potential terms associated to imaginary roots. The, as yet, mysterious relation between E10 and M-theory on $T^10$ can now be expanded as follows: real roots correspond to fluxes or instantons, and imaginary roots correspond to particles and branes (in the cases we checked). Interactions between fluxes and branes and between branes and branes are classified according to the inner product of the corresponding roots (again in the cases we checked). We conclude with a discussion of an effective Hamiltonian description that captures some features of M-theory on $T^10.$

M-theory and E10: Billiards, Branes, and Imaginary Roots

It is commonly believed that a successful period of inflation driven by a single or several scalar fields requires a specific hierarchy of masses given by $M_{inf}\\ll H \\ll M_{heavy}$, where $M_{inf}$ can correspond to several or a single light field and $M_{heavy}\\,\\,\\,$ corresponds to any heavy field that might be integrated out if it satisfies suitable conditions. This is at the heart of the so called $\\eta$-problem in inflation, since large contributions to the masses of the inflatons might spoil the slow-roll conditions required for inflation. We show that, while this is an unavoidable conclusion in single field inflation, in multifield inflation, heavy fields as defined above, may be fully responsible for a successful period of what we call fat slow-roll inflation. Moreover we show that in this scenario, the turning rate of the inflationary trajectory, $\\Omega/H$, is larger than one. Thus, the $\\eta$-problem is evaded with large turns in fat inflation. Depending on the perturbations' mass spectra, cosmological predictions will differ either slightly or largely with respect to those of the single field case. We illustrate this scenario in a concrete example in Type IIB string flux compactifications, where a probe D5-brane moving along the angular and radial directions in a warped throat drives fat D5-brane natural inflation. An instantaneous superplanckian decay constant can be defined, consistent with our low energy approximations, thanks to the strong warping of the geometry. We compute the cosmological observables, which differ from the single field case. We also discuss fat inflation in the context of recently proposed swampland de Sitter conjectures.

Fat Inflatons, Large Turns and the $\eta$-problem

We revisit moduli stabilisation for type IIB flux compactifications that include a warped throat region corresponding to a warped deformed conifold, with an anti-D3-brane sitting at its tip. The warping induces a coupling between the conifold's deformation modulus and the bulk volume modulus in the Kahler potential. Previous works have studied the scalar potential assuming a strong warping such that this coupling term dominates, and found that the anti-D3-brane uplift may destabilise the conifold modulus and/or volume modulus, unless flux numbers within the throat are large, which makes tadpole cancellation a challenge. We explore the regime of parameter space corresponding to a weakly-but-still warped throat, such that the coupling between the conifold and volume moduli is subdominant. We thus discover a new metastable de Sitter solution within the four-dimensional effective field theory. We discuss the position of this de Sitter vacuum in the string theory landscape and swampland.

A New de Sitter Solution with a Weakly Warped Deformed Conifold

We consider various candidates for Dark Energy, motivated by string theory. Several no-go theorems push de Sitter string vacua, with $w=-1$, to the limits of theoretical control, and all known examples depend on a delicate interplay between different string theoretic ingredients. On the other hand, runaway moduli directions are ubiquitous in string theory, and could plausibly source slow-roll quintessence. We consider various candidate supergravity potentials, motivated by string theory, including single-field Kahler potentials for bulk and local moduli, and leading superpotentials of the form $W = W_0 + A e^{-a \Phi}$ or $W = W_0 + A \Phi^p$. Conditions on the scalar potential imposed by supergravity are very restrictive, ruling out e.g. quintessence with $K=-n\ln(\Phi+\bar{\Phi})$ and $W = W_0+A \Phi^p$. Out of the examples considered, one can simultaneously satisfy $V>0$ and $\epsilon_V<1$ only for a deformation-like modulus with $K = k_0 + \frac{|\Phi|^{2n}}{k1}$ and a blow-up like modulus with $K=k_0 +\frac{(\Phi+\bar{\Phi})^{2n}}{k_1}$ when the leading order in the perturbative superpotential, $p$, is equal to $n$. We also review the scenario of Thermal Dark Energy, where thermal effects in a light hidden sector hold a scalar field up away from the minimum of its zero-temperature potential. This provides a viable model of Dark Energy with $w=-1$, consistent with known swampland conjectures, and motivates further early Thermal Dark Energy epochs with potentially observable consequences.
