A power amplifying and signal processing system for modulated carrier signals separately processes the amplitude component of the system input signal and the component of frequency or phase or both frequency and phase, and later recombines the separately processed components to provide an output signal. The amplitude and phase transfer functions of the system can be accurately controlled. The input signal is fed to a power amplifier whose output provides the output for the system. The input and output signals of the system are fed by separate paths to a comparator which compares those signals and emits an error signal to a controller. The controller regulates the amplitude and phase, or both, of the power amplifier''s output to null the error signal. One or both of the signal paths to the comparator may have in it a non-linear function generator which acts upon the signal fed by that path to the comparator. The system may also have a frequency translator and phase shifter interposed between the system input terminal and the power amplifier''s input to shift the frequency or phase or both of the signal applied to the power amplifier''s input.

A power management system and method for a wireless communication device generates an average desired transmit power signal based on at least one of a received signal strength indicator signal and a power control instruction signal from a base station. A power supply level adjustment signal is generated based on the data parameters of an outgoing data stream and at least one environmental information signal. A combination of the power supply level adjustment signal and the average desired transmit power or a gain control signal and an altered version of the power supply level adjustment signal is used to generate a variable power supply signal that is provided to an output amplifier block for sufficiently generating outgoing wireless device radio signals while reducing power loss in the output amplifier block.

A method and apparatus for efficient power amplification over a wide dynamic range and for a number of modulation formats includes a carrier amplifier (30) and a peaking amplifier (40). The carrier amplifier (30) operates with a bias generated by an envelope amplifier (80) which amplifies the envelope of an input signal as generated by an envelope detector (70). The peaking amplifier (40) operates with a fixed bias. The outputs of the carrier amplifier (30) and the peaking amplifier (40) are combined using an impedance transforming network (50). Envelope amplifier (80) can be turned on for high efficiency low power level operation, or it can be turned off for standard Doherty-type operation.

A power amplifying apparatus according to the present invention can provide a stable electric power output with wide range by controlling both of the output amplifier for amplifying the electric power and the pre-amplifier disposed at the front of the output amplifier. Various embodiments described herein relate to a power management block and an amplification block used in the transmitter of a communication subsystem. The power management block provides improved control for the gain control signal provided to a pre-amplifier and the supply voltage provided to a power amplifier which are both in the amplification block. The power expended by the power amplifier is optimized by employing a continuous control method in which one or more feedback loops are employed to take into account various characteristics of the transmitter components and control values.
