The Spirit and the 'Other': Social Identity, Ethnicity and Intergroup Reconciliation in Luke-Acts

Divine Visitations and Hospitality in Luke-Acts:
An Interpretation of the Malta Episode in Acts 28:1-10
This study presents a coherent interpretation of the Malta episode
by arguing that Acts 28:1-10 narrates a theoxeny, that is, an
account of unknowing hospitality to a god which results in the
establishment of a fictive kinship relationship between the
barbarians and Paul and his God. The scene in Acts 28:1-10 can be
understood to unfold along the three lines which are constitutive
of theoxenies. First, the barbarians show immediate hospitality to
the stranger Paul, the powerful agent of God. Second, Paul's
successful encounter with the viper reveals to the barbarians that
Paul is a divine emissary. Third, the relationship between Paul and
the barbarians is cemented through a ritualized form of
hospitality. In light of the connection between hospitality and
piety to the gods in the ancient Mediterranean, Luke ends his
second volume in this manner to portray Gentile hospitality as the
appropriate response to Paul's message of God's salvation.
Chapter one provides an introduction to the dissertation by
reviewing previous scholarship and highlighting the significant
components of the Malta episode. Chapter two sets forth a
socio-cultural literary analysis of Acts 28:1-10 that draws
attention to the main components of the text which call for further
study, but primarily highlights the necessity of understanding the
ancient Mediterranean cultural script of hospitality to strangers
for understanding the Malta episode. Chapters three and four are,
therefore, devoted to establishing the cultural script of
hospitality to strangers through an examination of Greco-Roman and
Jewish texts. Chapters five and six examine the role of hospitality
in Luke-Acts. Chapter five serves as a micro-level exploration of
the grammar, religious sanctions, and purposes of hospitality
through four Lukan texts. Chapter six is a macro-level study of
hospitality in the Lukan writings which gives a synthetic account
of Luke-Acts as a story which centers upon God's visitation of his
people and their (in)hospitable response to the divine visit.
Finally, the seventh chapter returns to Acts 28:1-10 and answers

Divine Visitations and Hospitality in Luke-Acts: An Interpretation of the Malta Episode in Acts 28:1-10

Scholarship on the book of Acts frequently proceeds under the 'no final con flict' slogan when it comes to employing a diversity of methods. In this essay, however, some of the fundamental assumptions and approaches to Acts in recent scholarship are examined and challenged, raising questions related to the proliferation of method in New Testament and early Christian studies, the underlying methodological assumptions of particular interpre tive approaches, and the sublimation of theology and ideology in scholar ship. The past 15 years of Acts scholarship provides the context for this broad survey and interaction. The essential contours of the discussion are focused around matters related to genre, the nature of Acts as 'text', the book's connections to its broader socio-cultural and historical worlds, and, finally, to matters related to post-critical interactions with Acts. Durch die vielfaltigen Schriftallusionen in Lk 1f. wird deutlich gemacht, dass das lukanische Doppelwerk als Fortschreibung der "Schriften" (= des AT) verstanden werden will. Die auf Jesus und sein Geschick bezogenen Schrift-Zitate im lukanischen Doppelwerk, die sich nahezu ausschliesslich im Mund von Erzahlfiguren befinden, sind in Lk 1-23 uberwiegend proleptisch und in Lk 24 sowie der Apostelgeschichte uberwiegend analeptisch ausgerichtet. Dreh- und Angelpunkt sind die Reden des Auferstandenen in Lk 24, mit Hilfe derer vor allem Petrus zum Glauben kommt. Daruber hinaus werden Schriftzitate bei Lukas auch als Handlungsanweisung sowie zur Gegenwartsdeutung herangezogen. Ein Vergleich mit der Verwendung von Zitaten in narrativen Texten anderer antiker Autoren (z.B. Makkabaerbucher, Josephus, Herodot, Thukydides, Polybios) verdeutlicht die Besonderheit der lukanischen Zitationsweise.

Most scholars share the opinion that Luke 10.18 is an authentic saying of Jesus. But by analysing the vision we can see that the saying in Luke 10.18 fits exactly in Lukan theology. In all probability this Jesus saying is written by Luke as an ‘internal heterodiegetic analepsis’ within the temporal frame of the Gospel. Even the positioning in the scene of the return of the disciples, and its genre as a vision can be explained as Lukan. This paper demonstrates that the ‘historische Plausibilitätskriterium’ proposed by Gerd Theißen and Dagmar Winter should begin with a ‘literarisches Differenzkriterium’. That is to say, to establish historical plausibility it must be possible first to show that the saying probably once had a life of its own and does not fit exactly in its present literary context. But the Jesus saying of Luke 10.18 does not fulfil this initial criterion.
