The engineering risk of pressure equipments is highly correlated with the following elements: material,pressure,temperature and media.In order to reduce and limit the engineering risk of the pressure equipments,every possible failure mechanism and modes of the equipments built by specific materials under certain conditions of the pressure,temperature and media have to be understood at first.Based on the perspective of the risk-based inspection,this article discussed the common failure mechanism and modes of the pressure equipments and the corresponding nondestructive testing solutions.

Nondestructive Testing of Pressure Equipment on RBI

Comparison test and practical experience clearly showed, the defect detectibility of the fluorescent magnetic particle testing is far higher than the black magnetic particle testing. For the safe use of pressure vessel, it was suggested that the fluorescent magnetic particle testing should be used for in-service inspection of some important pressure vessels.

Use of Fluorescent Magnetic Particle Testing for the Inspection of Surface Defects on Important Pressure Vessels

Three propylene spherical tanks which have both the same manufacturing parameters and conditions have been assessed based on risk assessment and non-destructive testing technology. One of the spherical tanks is stopped for comprehensive inspection, and the result of inspection verifies the reliability of risk assessment, which is applied to other two unopened propylene spherical tanks. Meanwhile, in order to make overall inspection level meet the requirements of the risk assessment and so reduce spherical tanks assessing risk, ultrasonic diffraction detection (TOFD) with high detection rate and fluorescent magnetic surface detection technology are adopted to ensure comprehensive test meeting the risk assessment requirements, which can also provide significant guidance for future complete equipment inspection.
