TL;DR: In this paper , a review of modern biotechnological tools and the tireless efforts of scientific community to develop novel strategies for pigeonpea improvement are discussed in this review.
Abstract: Due to non-availability of genetic resources in pigeonpea, the applied conventional breeding strategies exhibited partial success. Recent developments in genetic and genomic resources have provided new opportunities for the improvement of this grain legume. Expression of bacterial Cry proteins in plant exhibited durable resistance against the pod borer, H. armigera through transgenic development. Dearth of reproducible strategies and coordinated research efforts are deterrent for development of resistant pigeonpea varieties. Additionally, problems related to recalcitrant tissue culture responses, poor regeneration efficiency, and low competency for genetic transformation were considered as major deficiencies. Several in vitro tissue culture-based transformation strategies were applied for development of transgenic pigeonpea. But the success of these methods is not satisfactory due to lack of reproducibility. Advancement of modern biotechnological tools and the tireless efforts of scientific community to develop novel strategies for pigeonpea improvement are discussed in this review.
