A transceiver apparatus for creating a wireless personal local area network between a computer terminal and one or more peripheral devices. A separate transceiver is connected to the computer terminal and to each peripheral device. The transceivers can be connected to the terminal or peripheral device either internally or externally. A low power radio is used to communicate information between the computer terminal and peripheral devices. Different transceivers can be used for modifying the carrier frequency and power of the local area network. The microprocessor is located inside each transceiver and controls the information flow of the transceiver including the communication protocol which allows each device to know if other devices are communicating, which devices are being communicated to, and selectively address the peripheral devices. An Idle Sense communication protocol is used for information transfer between the computer terminal and the peripheral devices, increasing efficiency in power management and compensating for transmission collisions.

Techniques to test performance of terminals and access points in CDMA data (e.g., cdma2000) systems. A framework of protocols and messages is provided to support systematic performance testing of terminals and to ensure interface compatibility. The framework comprises a Forward Test Application Protocol (FTAP) for testing forward channels and a Reverse Test Application Protocol (RTAP) for testing reverse channels. Techniques are also provided to (1) test different types of channels (e.g., traffic channels as well as auxiliary channels), (2) test bursty data transmissions, (3) support “persistence” testing (i.e., continued testing over connection and disconnection), (4) force the settings of certain auxiliary channels (e.g., so that the error rate of the channels may be determined), and (5) collect, log, and report various statistics that may be used to derive performance metrics such as throughput and packet error rate.

Method and apparatus for testing traffic and auxiliary channels in a wireless data communication system

A satellite communications system is provided for full mesh connectivity between a number of earth terminals via a satellite link. The earth terminals are connected to user access devices to receive and transmit voice, video and data and are operable to generate bursts to transmit user data via a satellite, and to process data received from the satellite and transmit it to the addressed user access devices. The terminals each comprise a programmable computing device which prioritizes data into bursts using a fragmentation protocol. The programmable computing device also organizes bursts in at least one of a plurality of slots constituting a time division multiple access frame in accordance with a burst plan. Each terminal has access to a guaranteed number of the slots. The allocation of the remaining slots among the terminals varies dynamically to increase or decrease the burst transmission rates of the terminals as needed. Dynamic assignment of slots depends on committed information rates, the lengths of data queues in the terminals and the type of data to be transmitted. Terminals need not be assigned consecutive ones of the dynamically assignable slots.

Full mesh satellite-based multimedia networking system

A method and apparatus for using a loopback capability of a radio frequency (RF) repeater to provide for end-to-end testing without a wireline connection is disclosed. A RF source sends a signaling waveform to the RF repeater. Upon receiving the signaling waveform, the RF repeater enters the loopback mode. The RF source sends another identical signaling waveform to the RF repeater to end the loopback mode. In another embodiment, a base transceiver station (BTS) sends a signaling waveform to an intelligent RF repeater-translator upon detection of a lack of activity. The received signaling waveform places the intelligent RF repeater translator into a loopback mode. If alarms are present in the intelligent RF repeater-translator, the intelligent RF repeater-translator ceases processing and the BTS informs the OMC of the error condition. Otherwise, the loopback mode is entered and BTS initiates testing of the intelligent RF repeater-translator. The loopback mode is discontinued when the intelligent RF repeater-translator receives another identical signaling waveform or after a time-out period elapses. The intelligent RF repeater-translator has the capability to alternate the selected diversity uplink path from one loopback test to the next loop back test to ensure full testing of all RF paths.

Method and apparatus employing wireless remote loopback capability for a wireless system repeater to provide end-to-end testing without a wireline connection

A secure point-of-sale (POS) portal architecture for delivering multiple services is provided. According to one exemplary aspect of the architecture, a number of services offered by various parties are integrated for delivery to merchants. The parties offering the services include, for example, payment processors and merchant acquirers and other external value-added service providers. The integrated services, in turn, are offered to merchants and/or their respective customers via one or more POS devices and its supporting system infrastructure at the merchant locations. The integrated services include, for example, acceptance of multiple payment instruments, payment processing, user dialog management, sales promotion and customer support, loyalty programs, back office processing, receipt capture, employee training, risk management, dispute resolution, system security, system administration etc. Moreover, these integrated services may be customized based on a merchant's particular requirements to provide a specific environment for delivering these services.

Method and system for providing multiple services via a point-of-sale portal architecture

In a base station of a mobile cellular telephone system of the type having time division multiple access (TDMA) channels, a radio frequency test loop is established between a predetermined downlink channel of a base station transmitter and a predetermined uplink channel of a base station receiver. The test loop is in real time, thereby eliminating the time offset of the radio channels used for communications. The radio frequency test loop includes a circuit for transposing the frequency of the carrier signal from the transmitter to a frequency that can be received by the receiver. The signal having the transposed frequency is used in tests for determining values such as bit error rate (BER), transmission signal level, or reception sensitivity.

A method and apparatus for testing a base station in a time division multiple access radio communications system

A malfunction position detection system is disclosed for a modular telecommunication facility. Each telecommunication facility is constructed out of a plurality of modular cabinets (10) which are positioned in a station rack (30). The malfunction position detection system includes switches (18) for setting the position of each cabinet in the station rack. The cabinet position is read off of a bus connected to the switches by a plurality of electronic units (14) connected to the cabinet. The cabinet position is stored in some of the electronic units. As a result, the cabinet position can be sent along with an error message to the cellular system when an error occurs.
