Massive gravity has seen a resurgence of interest due to recent progress which has overcome its traditional problems, yielding an avenue for addressing important open questions such as the cosmological constant naturalness problem. The possibility of a massive graviton has been studied on and off for the past 70 years. During this time, curiosities such as the van Dam, Veltman, and Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity and the Boulware-Deser ghost were uncovered. These results are rederived in a pedagogical manner and the St\"uckelberg formalism to discuss them from the modern effective field theory viewpoint is developed. Recent progress of the last decade is reviewed, including the dissolution of the vDVZ discontinuity via the Vainshtein screening mechanism, the existence of a consistent effective field theory with a stable hierarchy between the graviton mass and the cutoff, and the existence of particular interactions which raise the maximal effective field theory cutoff and remove the ghosts. In addition, some peculiarities of massive gravitons on curved space, novel theories in three dimensions, and examples of the emergence of a massive graviton from extra dimensions and brane worlds are reviewed.

Theoretical Aspects of Massive Gravity

We discuss possible phase factors for the S-matrix of planar gauge theory, leading to modifications at four-loop order as compared to an earlier proposal. While these result in a four-loop breakdown of perturbative BMN scaling, Kotikov?Lipatov transcendentality in the universal scaling function for large-spin twist operators may be preserved. One particularly natural choice, unique up to one constant, modifies the overall contribution of all terms containing odd-zeta functions in the earlier proposed scaling function based on a trivial phase. Excitingly, we present evidence that this choice is non-perturbatively related to a recently conjectured crossing-symmetric phase factor for perturbative string theory on AdS5 ? S5 once the constant is fixed to a particular value. Our proposal, if true, might therefore resolve the long-standing AdS/CFT discrepancies between gauge and string theory.

Flux compactifications in string theory: A Comprehensive review

We study some features of bosonic particle path-integral quantization in a twistor-like approach by use of the BRST-BFV quantization prescription. In the course of the Hamiltonian analysis we observe links between various formulations of the twistor-like particle by performing a conversion of the Hamiltonian constraints of one formulation to another. A particular feature of the conversion procedure applied to turn the second-class constraints into the first-class constraints is that the simplest Lorentz-covariant way to do this is to convert a full mixed set of the initial first- and second-class constraints rather than explicitly extracting and converting only the second-class constraints. Another novel feature of the conversion procedure applied below is that in the case of the D=4 and D=6 twistor-like particle the number of new auxiliary Lorentz-covariant coordinates, which one introduces to get a system of first-class constraints in an extended phase space, exceeds the number of independent second-class constraints of the original dynamical system. We calculate the twistor-like particle propagator in D=3, 4 and 6 space-time dimensions and show, that it coincides with that of a conventional massless bosonic particle.

On the BRST Quantization of the Massless Bosonic Particle in Twistor-Like Formulation

We consider couplings of electrically and magnetically charged sources to the maximally symmetric non-linear extension of Maxwell’s theory called ModMax. The aim is to reveal physical effects which distinguish ModMax from Maxwell’s electrodynamics. We find that, in contrast to generic models of non-linear electrodynamics, Lienard-Wiechert fields induced by a moving electric or magnetic particle, or a dyon are exact solutions of the ModMax equations of motion. We then study whether and how ModMax non-linearity affects properties of electromagnetic interactions of charged objects, in particular the Lorentz force, the Coulomb law, the Lienard-Wiechert fields, Dirac’s and Schwinger’s quantization of electric and magnetic charges, and the Compton Effect. In passing we also present an alternative form of the ModMax Lagrangian in terms of the coupling of Maxwell’s theory to axiondilaton-like auxiliary scalar fields which may be relevant for revealing the effective field theory origin of ModMax. ar X iv :2 20 6. 04 65 7v 1 [ he pth ] 9 J un 2 02 2

Duality-symmetric and self-dual fields (chiral bosons) are an important part of various theoretical models which are considered in the modern superstring theory. For a long period of time there has been a problem of how to construct an action for such fields which would simultaneously possess both duality symmetry and Lorentz-covariance.
