Triplet photosensitizers (PSs) are compounds that can be efficiently excited to the triplet excited state which subsequently act as catalysts in photochemical reactions. The name is originally derived from compounds that were used to transfer the triplet energy to other compounds that have only a small intrinsic triplet state yield. Triplet PSs are not only used for triplet energy transfer, but also for photocatalytic organic reactions, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photoinduced hydrogen production from water and triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion. A good PS should exhibit strong absorption of the excitation light, a high yield of intersystem crossing (ISC) for efficient production of the triplet state, and a long triplet lifetime to allow for the reaction with a reactant molecule. Most transition metal complexes show efficient ISC, but small molar absorption coefficients in the visible spectral region and short-lived triplet excited states, which make them unsuitable as triplet PSs. One obstacle to the development of new triplet PSs is the difficulty in predicting the ISC of chromophores, especially of organic compounds without any heavy atoms. This review article summarizes some molecular design rationales for triplet PSs, based on the molecular structural factors that facilitate ISC. The design of transition metal complexes with large molar absorption coefficients in the visible spectral region and long-lived triplet excited states is presented. A new method of using a spin converter to construct heavy atom-free organic triplet PSs is discussed, with which ISC becomes predictable, C60 being an example. To enhance the performance of triplet PSs, energy funneling based triplet PSs are proposed, which show broadband absorption in the visible region. Applications of triplet PSs in photocatalytic organic reactions, hydrogen production, triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion and luminescent oxygen sensing are briefly introduced.

Triplet photosensitizers: from molecular design to applications

Boron dipyrromethene (Bodipy) is one of the most extensively investigated organic chromophores. Most of the investigations are focused on the singlet excited state of Bodipy, such as fluorescence. In stark contrast, the study of the triplet excited state of Bodipy is limited, but it is an emerging area, since the triplet state of Bodipy is tremendously important for several areas, such as the fundamental photochemistry study, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photocatalysis and triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion. The recent developments in the study of the production, modulation and application of the triplet excited state of Bodipy are discussed in this review article. The formation of the triplet state of Bodipy upon photoexcitation, via the well known approach such as the heavy atom effect (including I, Br, Ru, Ir, etc.), and the new methods, such as using a spin converter (e.g. C60), charge recombination, exciton coupling and the doubly substituted excited state, are summarized. All the Bodipy-based triplet photosensitizers show strong absorption of visible or near IR light and the long-lived triplet excited state, which are important for the application of the triplet excited state in PDT or photocatalysis. Moreover, the methods for switching (or modulation) of the triplet excited state of Bodipy were discussed, such as those based on the photo-induced electron transfer (PET), by controlling the competing Forster-resonance-energy-transfer (FRET), or the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT). Controlling the triplet excited state will give functional molecules such as activatable PDT reagents or molecular devices. It is worth noting that switching of the singlet excited state and the triplet state of Bodipy may follow different principles. Application of the triplet excited state of Bodipy in PDT, hydrogen (H2) production, photoredox catalytic organic reactions and TTA upconversion were discussed. The challenges and the opportunities in these areas were briefly discussed.

The triplet excited state of Bodipy: formation, modulation and application

Direct laser writing has become a versatile and routine tool for the mask-free fabrication of polymer structures with lateral linewidths down to less than 100 nm. In contrast to its planar counterpart, electron-beam lithography, direct laser writing also allows for the making of three-dimensional structures. However, its spatial resolution has been restricted by diffraction. Clearly, linewidths and resolutions on the scale of few tens of nanometers and below are highly desirable for various applications in nanotechnology. In visible-light far-field fluorescence microscopy, the concept of stimulated emission depletion (STED) introduced in 1994 has led to spectacular record resolutions down to 5.6 nm in 2009. This review addresses approaches aiming at translating this success in optical microscopy to optical lithography. After explaining basic principles and limitations, possible depletion mechanisms and recent lithography experiments by various groups are summarized. Today, Abbe's diffraction barrier as well as the generalized two-photon Sparrow criterion have been broken in far-field optical lithography. For further future progress in resolution, the development of novel tailored photoresists in combination with attractive laser sources is of utmost importance.

Three-dimensional optical laser lithography beyond the diffraction limit

Multicomponent reactions have gained significant importance as a tool for the synthesis of a wide variety of useful compounds, including pharmaceuticals. In this context, the multiple component approach is especially appealing in view of the fact that products are formed in a single step, and the diversity can be readily achieved simply by varying the reacting components. The eco-friendly, solvent-free multicomponent approach opens up numerous possibilities for conducting rapid organic synthesis and functional group transformations more efficiently. Additionally, there are distinct advantages of these solvent-free protocols since they provide reduction or elimination of solvents thereby preventing pollution in organic synthesis “at source”. The chemo-, regio- or stereoselective synthesis of high-value chemical entities and parallel synthesis to generate a library of small molecules will add to the growth of multicomponent solvent-free reactions in the near future. In this review we summarized the results reported mainly within the last 10 years. It is quite clear from the growing number of emerging publications in this field that the possibility to utilize multicomponent technology allows reaction conditions to be accessed that are very valuable for organic synthesis. Therefore, diversity oriented synthesis (DOS) is rapidly becoming one of the paradigms in the process of modern drug discovery. This has spurred research in those fields of chemical investigation that lead to the rapid assembly of not only molecular diversity, but also molecular complexity. As a consequence multi-component as well as domino or related reactions are witnessing a new spring.

Recent developments in solvent-free multicomponent reactions: a perfect synergy for eco-compatible organic synthesis

Compound 1 was designed and synthesized as a new fluorescent thiol probe. Probe 1 was constructed on the basis of the conjugate 1,4-addition of thiols to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Notably, probe 1 has suitable water solubility, which allows the sensing assay to be performed in water. Probe 1 is highly sensitive for thiols with a 211-fold fluorescence dynamic range and a low detection limit of 9.25x10(-7) M. The major features of probe 1 also include a high selectivity for thiols over other relevant biological species, excitation and emission in the visible region, rapid functioning at pH 7.4, and a good linear relationship between the fluorescence signal and the thiol concentration. Accordingly, these desirable characteristics may render probe 1 as potentially useful for biological applications.
