The process and consequences of reporting child maltreatment: A brief overview for professionals in the mental health field

An interdisciplinary legal and social work framework for peace building is presented. Inequality and its eradication are identified as linking factors transforming conflict into coexistence. Peace building is determined to entail participation in the struggle for social justice. Three conditions are identified as central to the peace building process. The first necessitates the establishment of inclusive, autonomous communities, each free to express religious, cultural and national aspirations and identity. The second requires the recognition of the legitimacy of each community to assert rights and claims without denying those of the other. This premise supports the view of the individual in relation and notes that coexistence can only be advanced through the building of mutual relationships. Finally, peace building requires recognition of human rights as a tool to promote relationships both within and between societies.

Peace building: a conceptual framework

A notificacao compulsoria dos casos de violencia e um instrumento capaz de mobilizar a rede de protecao as criancas e adolescentes e de compor o sistema de informacao, visando ao planejamento de politicas publicas para seu enfrentamento. O trabalho tem como objetivos: (a) caracterizar o contexto historico de enfrentamento da violencia sexual contra criancas e adolescentes, e o seu processo de notificacao, no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos (EUA); (b) estabelecer parâmetros de comparacao entre a realidade brasileira e americana. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa documental de leis, portarias e normativas sobre a notificacao compulsoria do abuso sexual contra criancas e adolescentes, complementadas pela literatura nacional e internacional acerca da questao. Pode-se observar que, enquanto nos EUA o processo de notificacao e detalhado e distribuido por seus estados, no Brasil os estudos ainda requerem maior aprofundamento sobre a tematica, sobretudo no que diz respeito as iniciativas regionais.

This article addresses the need for social work students to understand basic legal concepts and their application in social work. It begins with a review of recent literature on teaching law within the social work curriculum. It then reports on the authors' April 1991 survey of accredited MSW programs, which showed that few schools require MSW students to study law, but that curricula have little room to expand. Finally, the article describes a flexible approach to infusing legal content into existing social work courses by focusing on six legal precepts: the definition and regulation of practice; client issues; privacy; advocacy; conflict/liability; and precedents.

Infusing legal issues into the social work curriculum

This study examined the extent to which criminal justice content is addressed in all CSWE-accredited MSW programs in the United States (N = 192). Criminal justice content was measured in three areas: (1) dual or joint degree programs, (2) concentrations or specializations, and (3) coursework. Excluding social work and law classes, 22% of all MSW programs offered a course specific to criminal justice. Nine programs (5%) offered a concentration or specialization in criminal justice. Only 1% of MSW programs offered all three areas of criminal justice content. These findings indicate that opportunities for MSW students to explore interests in criminal justice are quite limited. Implications for the influence of the social work profession on criminal justice policy and practice are discussed.
