Copolymers of a carboxylic acid monomer and one or more higher, that is 10 to 30 carbon atoms, alkyl acrylate esters surprisingly serve as efficient thickeners of aqueous solutions, even in the presence of substantial amounts of inorganic salts such as sodium chloride.

Acrylate pressure sensitive adhesives are prepared having improved internal strength by preparing tacky acrylate polymers containing alkoxy silyl alkyl groups of the general formula ##STR1## where R' and R" are either CH 3 -- or CH 3 CH 2 -- and R is one of the group consisting of CH 3 --; CH 3 CH 2 --; CH 3 O--; and CH 3 CHO--, and n is a number of 0 through 8 In an amount of 0.01 to 1.0 percent by weight, based on the weight of the acrylate polymer, spreading a solution of the acrylate polymer onto a substrate, removing the solvent from the substrate and crosslinking the polymer by heating with or without the presence of a catalyst. The acrylate polymers contain in interpolymerized form at least 50 percent by weight, based on the weight of the polymer, of alkyl acrylate monomer having alkyl group of C 4 to C 12 carbons. Also, in the preferred practice crosslinking is carried out by adding a suitable catalyst to the solution of adhesive prior to spreading the same on a substrate with subsequent solvent evaporation and crosslinking of the polymer.

Pressure sensitive adhesive tapes and method of making same

A device having a flow channel, wherein at least one flow-terminating interface is used to control the flow of liquid in the flow channel. The flow-terminating interface prevents the flow of the liquid beyond the interface. In one aspect, the invention provides a sensor, such as, for example, a biosensor, in the form of a strip, the sensor being suitable for electrochemical or optical measurement. The sensor comprises a base layer and a cover layer, and the base layer is separated from the cover layer by a spacer layer. The base layer, cover layer, and spacer layer define a flow channel into which a liquid sample is drawn therein and flows therethrough by means of capillary attraction. The flow of the sample is terminated by a flow-terminating interface positioned in the flow channel.

A heat-activatable adhesive article is provided. The article, preferably a tape, includes a substantially laterally stable heat recoverable carrier film having at least one surface comprising a recessed surface portion and a raised surface portion therein; and an adhesive layer in the recessed surface portion in an amount such that the adhesive does not extend above the raised surface portion thereby forming an exposed raised surface portion. In use, the carrier film recovers upon exposure to heat thereby allowing the adhesive in the recessed surface portion to contact a substrate. The heat-activatable adhesive article can be positionable, repositionable, or both.

An individual absorbent article package, such as a sanitary napkin wrapper and an adhesive fastening system for such a wrapper are disclosed. The adhesive fastening system comprises a tape tab having an adhesive for releasably securing the wrapper and sanitary napkin in a folded configuration prior to and after use. The adhesive is adhered to a landing surface such as a portion of the sanitary napkin wrapper that forms part of the package body. The landing surface need not be reinforced to prevent tearing upon opening of the package. The fastening system provides bond security while at the same time making the fastening system easy to open without tearing by carefully matching of the properties of the adhesive, the tape tab, and the landing surface. The surface characteristics, elasticity modulus, and caliper of the landing surface are specified. The agressiveness (quick-stick) and coating weights of the adhesive are carefully selected to provide an adhesive fastening system that bonds easily, holds securely and is refastenable.

Refastenable adhesive fastening systems for individually packaged disposable absorbent articles

A self cross-linking pressure-sensitive acrylate adhesive and tape based on an adhesive copolymer of monomers comprising a major amount of a medium chain length alkyl acrylate monomer and preferably a minor amount of a cohesion inducing short chain monomer, plus a very small amount of an alkoxy silyl polymerizable cross-linking monomer and a relatively small amount, i.e., about 2-6 parts by weight of the total monomer solids, of a catalytic acid monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and itaconic acid. The catalytic acid monomer acts as a built-in or internal catalyst which causes the adhesive copolymer to be self crosslinking. A stabilization system for this self cross-linking system also is disclosed.
