As a new concept that emerged in the middle of 1990's, data mining can help researchers gain both novel and deep insights and can facilitate unprecedented understanding of large biomedical datasets. Data mining can uncover new biomedical and healthcare knowledge for clinical and administrative decision making as well as generate scientific hypotheses from large experimental data, clinical databases, and/or biomedical literature. This review first introduces data mining in general (e.g., the background, definition, and process of data mining), discusses the major differences between statistics and data mining and then speaks to the uniqueness of data mining in the biomedical and healthcare fields. A brief summarization of various data mining algorithms used for classification, clustering, and association as well as their respective advantages and drawbacks is also presented. Suggested guidelines on how to use data mining algorithms in each area of classification, clustering, and association are offered along with three examples of how data mining has been used in the healthcare industry. Given the successful application of data mining by health related organizations that has helped to predict health insurance fraud and under-diagnosed patients, and identify and classify at-risk people in terms of health with the goal of reducing healthcare cost, we introduce how data mining technologies (in each area of classification, clustering, and association) have been used for a multitude of purposes, including research in the biomedical and healthcare fields. A discussion of the technologies available to enable the prediction of healthcare costs (including length of hospital stay), disease diagnosis and prognosis, and the discovery of hidden biomedical and healthcare patterns from related databases is offered along with a discussion of the use of data mining to discover such relationships as those between health conditions and a disease, relationships among diseases, and relationships among drugs. The article concludes with a discussion of the problems that hamper the clinical use of data mining by health professionals.

Data Mining in Healthcare and Biomedicine: A Survey of the Literature

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of logistic regression, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and decision tree models for predicting diabetes or prediabetes using common risk factors. Participants came from two communities in Guangzhou, China; 735 patients confirmed to have diabetes or prediabetes and 752 normal controls were recruited. A standard questionnaire was administered to obtain information on demographic characteristics, family diabetes history, anthropometric measurements and lifestyle risk factors. Then we developed three predictive models using 12 input variables and one output variable from the questionnaire information; we evaluated the three models in terms of their accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The logistic regression model achieved a classification accuracy of 76.13% with a sensitivity of 79.59% and a specificity of 72.74%. The ANN model reached a classification accuracy of 73.23% with a sensitivity of 82.18% and a specificity of 64.49%; and the decision tree (C5.0) achieved a classification accuracy of 77.87% with a sensitivity of 80.68% and specificity of 75.13%. The decision tree model (C5.0) had the best classification accuracy, followed by the logistic regression model, and the ANN gave the lowest accuracy.

Comparison of three data mining models for predicting diabetes or prediabetes by risk factors.

Hypertension is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. In this study, performance of classification techniques is compared in order to predict the risk of essential hypertension disease. A retrospective analysis was performed in 694 subjects (452 patients and 242 controls). We compared performances of three decision trees, four statistical algorithms, and two neural networks. Predictor variables were age, sex, family history of hypertension, smoking habits, lipoprotein (a), triglyceride, uric acid, total cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI). Classification techniques were grouped using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The data points appeared to cluster in three groups. The first cluster included MLP and RBF. Furthermore CART which was more similar than other techniques linked this cluster. The second cluster included FDA/MARS (degree=1), LR and QUEST, but FDA/MARS (degree=1) and LR was more similar than QUEST. The third cluster included FDA/MARS (degree=2), CHAID and FDA, but FDA/MARS (degree=2) and CHAID was more similar than FDA. MLP and RBF which are one each of neural networks procedures, performed better than other techniques in predicting hypertension. QUEST had a lesser performance than other techniques.

Data mining for occupational injuries in the Taiwan construction industry

While knowledge management (KM) is becoming an established discipline with many applications and techniques, its adoption in health care has been challenging. Though, the health care sector relies heavily on knowledge and evidence based medicine is expected to be implemented in daily health care activities; besides, delivery of care replies on cooperation of several partners that need to exchange their knowledge in order to provide quality of care. In public health decision is mainly based on data and a shift is needed towards evidence based decision making. It is obvious that health care can profit from many advantages that KM can provide. Nevertheless, several challenges are ahead, some are proper to KM and other particular to the health care field. This chapter will overview KM, its methods and techniques, and provide and insight into health care current challenges and needs, discuss applications of KM in health care and provide some future perspectives for KM in health care.
