Motivation is recognized as a vital component in successful second language learning, and has been the subject of intensive research in recent decades. This review focuses on a growing branch of this research effort, that which examines the motivational effects of language teaching. This is pertinent because, despite enhanced mobility and expanding access to foreign languages online, most learners’ early encounters with the second language (L2) still take place in classrooms, and these encounters may shape attitudes and determine students’ willingness to invest further in the L2. Four main types of research are reviewed: first, that which deliberately seeks to identify and evaluate strategies to motivate L2 learners; second, that which has tested the validity of psychological theories of motivation by applying their precepts in L2 classrooms; third, that which assesses the motivational effects of a pedagogical innovation or intervention; fourth, research on what has been too often the unintended outcome of language education, namely learner demotivation. The review highlights the complexity of the relationship between teaching and learner motivation but an attempt is made to articulate some emerging verities and to point towards the most promising avenues for future research.

The motivational dimension of language teaching

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that influence users’ behavioral intention (BI) to adopt mobile social networking sites (mSNS) in facilitating formal/informal learning. Specifically, the study also investigates the association of mobility, reachability and convenience with performance expectancy (PE) and effort expectancy (EE). Design/methodology/approach – Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was applied to test on 266 valid responses. Findings – The findings indicated that learning compatibility (LC), PE, EE and copyright clearance (CC) has a significant effect on BI. The results also revealed that EE is influenced by mobility, reachability and convenience. PE however was found to be influenced by convenience. A multi-case study of university students’ language-learning experience mediated by mobile technologies: a socio-cultural perspective

Interest in using mobile applications to enhance students’ learning in Spanish classrooms runs high; however, little empirical research about their effects has been conducted. Using intentionally designed classroom activities to promote meaningful learning with a mobile application, we investigated the extent to which students of Spanish as a second language (L2) could improve accuracy in conjugating verbs. Pre- and posttest results show that these activities helped students improve not only accuracy but also confidence in conjugating Spanish verbs. The 80 students who participated in this study for four consecutive semesters reported an overall positive experience with the verb-conjugating activities but noted some limitations. Results of this empirical study enhance the learning of Spanish with a mobile application in the classroom.

Use of a game-like application on a mobile device to improve accuracy in conjugating Spanish verbs

Fifty-three students in three graduate TESOL classes participated in this study. All participants completed five class projects designed to help them explore mobile learning experiences with their own mobile devices, incorporating technologies such as YouTube and VoiceThread. We identified characteristics of these mobile users in Mobile Language Learning (MLL), and the results illuminate how MLL opens up new pedagogical scaffoldings.
