One or more embodiments are directed to a multimode antenna structure for transmitting and receiving electromagnetic signals in a communications device. The communications device includes circuitry for processing signals communicated to and from the antenna structure. The antenna structure is configured for optimal operation in a given frequency range. The antenna structure includes a plurality of antenna ports operatively coupled to the circuitry, and a plurality of antenna elements, each operatively coupled to a different one of the antenna ports. Each of the plurality of antenna elements is configured to have an electrical length selected to provide optimal operation within the given frequency range. The antenna structure also includes one or more connecting elements electrically connecting the antenna elements such that electrical currents on one antenna element flow to a connected neighboring antenna element and generally bypass the antenna port coupled to the neighboring antenna element. The electrical currents flowing through the one antenna element and the neighboring antenna element are generally equal in magnitude, such that an antenna mode excited by one antenna port is generally electrically isolated from a mode excited by another antenna port at a given desired signal frequency range without the use of a decoupling network connected to the antenna ports, and the antenna structure generates diverse antenna patterns.

Multimode antenna structure

An electronic device provides a capability of distinguishing between human tissue and a non-human object in proximity of a transmission source. In this manner, transmission power adjustments to the transmission source can be made selectively, depending on whether human tissue or a non-human object is detected in the proximity of the RF transmitter. Distinguishing between human tissue and other non-human-tissue objects in proximity of the transmission source provides for selective control of SAR adjustments. Accordingly, an electronic device can avoid certain communication performance reductions introduced by decreases in transmission power effected to comply with SAR standards by reducing transmission power when human tissue is detected in the proximity but not reducing transmission power when a non-human object (but no human tissue) is detected in the proximity.

Selective specific absorption rate adjustment

A multi-band antenna adapted to a portable electrical device capable of operating in various wireless communication bands includes a first radiating conductor having opposite elongated sides, a second radiating conductor extending from one end of the first radiating conductor, a third radiating conductor arranging about a central area of the first radiating. Both the second radiating conductor and the third radiating conductor extend from the same elongated side of the first radiating conductor. A feeding body is curved and extended from the third radiating conductor. According to a position that the feeding body connecting to the third radiating conductor and designed the feeding body, operation of the multi-band antenna has a preferred range of a low frequency bandwidth and a high frequency harmonic bandwidth.

Multi-band antenna

A chassis-excited antenna apparatus, and methods of tuning and utilizing the same. In one embodiment, a distributed loop antenna configuration is used within a handheld mobile device (e.g., cellular telephone). The antenna comprises two radiating elements: one configured to operate in a high-frequency band, and the other in a low-frequency band. The two antenna elements are disposed on different side surfaces of the metal chassis of the portable device; e.g., on the opposing sides of the device enclosure. Each antenna component comprises a radiator and an insulating cover. The radiator is coupled to a device feed via a feed conductor and a ground point. A portion of the feed conductor is disposed with the radiator to facilitate forming of the coupled loop resonator structure.

Chassis-excited antenna apparatus and methods

An electronic device includes a metal housing, a conductive member disposed adjacent to the metal housing, a plurality of ground parts including a first ground part electrically connected with a first point of the conductive member and a second ground part electrically connected with a second point of the conductive member, a ground plate electrically connected with the metal housing and electrically connected with the conductive member via the plurality of ground parts, and a feeding part electrically connected with the conductive member.

Electronic device comprising antenna

A multiple input-multiple output antenna assembly with high isolation between the antennas is disclosed. The antenna assembly includes a substrate with a ground layer at its surface. Two antennas are disposed opposing each other on the substrate. An isolation element in a form of a patterned slot is interposed between the first and second antennas on the ground plane. A first signal port is provided for applying a first signal to excite the first antenna and a second signal port is provided for applying a second signal to excite the second antenna. The isolation element provides isolation that inhibits electromagnetic propagation between the two antennas.

Wideband, high isolation two port antenna array for multiple input, multiple output handheld devices

A compact integrated dual-port diversity antenna is presented, which is suitable for long-term evolution (LTE) and wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) applications in handheld devices. The antenna design merges two planar inverted F-shaped antennas (PIFAs) into a single-antenna structure that not only occupies less volume in a handheld device but also eliminates the need to separate two individual antenna elements, which provides further space-saving efficiency. This can be accomplished even while maintaining desirable isolation and diversity characteristics. The proposed design can thus be utilized in compact wireless handheld communication devices that require signal diversity. An example design is described for 2.6-GHz LTE/Wi-Fi bands (2.5-2.7 GHz), which has been implemented in real-world cellular phone environments and include interactions between the antenna, other components of the device, and a model of a human head (the specific anthropomorphic mannequin phantom). The simulated and experimental results, including S-parameters, radiation patterns, signal correlations, and mean effective gain values, have validated the proposed antenna design as useful for compact mobile devices.

A Compact Dual-Port Diversity Antenna for Long-Term Evolution Handheld Devices

A dual-antenna diversity antenna system that operates within a low frequency band range is disclosed. Two antennas are folded separately onto a single three dimensional dielectric substrate in a meander pattern configuration. Each antenna has an independent feed port and ground pin. The two antennas are configured within a compact mobile terminal to produce high isolation and low correlation at resonating frequencies within the 700 Megahertz frequency band.

Low frequency dual-antenna diversity system

An antenna assembly for a mobile wireless communication device has a support with a first surface and a second surface between which a third surface and a fourth surface extend. A conductive ground plane is formed on the second surface. An antenna includes an electrically conductive patch located on the first surface, and first and second electrically conductive legs and an electrically conductive stripe all abutting the patch. In one version the first and second legs and the strip are all on the third surface. In another version the first and second legs are on the third surface and the strip is on the fourth surface that is orthogonal to the third surface. A first signal port is adapted to apply a first signal to the first leg and a second signal port is adapted to apply a second signal to the third leg.

Multiple input, multiple output antenna for handheld communication devices

Antenna apparatus, and an associated methodology, for a multi-frequency-band-capable radio device, such as a quad-band mobile station. The antenna apparatus forms a hybrid strip antenna having a pair of resonant elements. A first resonant element forms a peripheral loop extending about the periphery of a substrate. A meander line extends along a portion of the peripheral loop. And, second resonant element is formed of an L-shaped strip. The peripheral loop is resonant at a set of frequencies, and the L-shaped strip is resonant at a single frequency. Through appropriate selection of the lengths of the resonant elements, the frequencies at which the elements are resonant are controlled.
