The treatment of menopausal symptoms by traditional East Asian medicines: Review and perspectives

This study was conducted to examine the nutritional status, quality of diet and quality of life in postmenopausal women with mild climacteric symptoms based on their food group intake patterns. The data for nutritional status were obtained using 3-day records. Quality of diet was assessed by INQ, NAR, MAR, DDS, DVS, DQI-I. Climacteric symptoms were analyzed by the questionnaire of Kupperman's index and MENoL. The subjects were classified into the five groups, GMVDF, GMVdF, GMVDf, GMVdf, GmVDF according to their food group intake patterns. Analysis of nutrient intakes showed that the GMVDF group took significantly higher levels of kcal, carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, phosphorous, sodium, iron, zinc and fiber than GMVdf group did (p < 0.05). INQ of Ca and Fe appeared to be higher in GMVDF than in GMVdf groups (p < 0.05). Analysis of NARs showed that missing milk groups took lower riboflavin, Ca and P than other groups did as the same result with MAR (p < 0.05). Analysis of DDS and DQI showed that GMVdf group had the lowest quality of diet (p < 0.05); however, no difference was found on DVS. The GMVdf group showed the worst climacteric symptoms compared with those of the other groups (p < 0.05). However, we couldn't observe any differences in menopause-specific quality of life among the groups. In conclusion, it would be beneficial to meet all five food groups to increase the quality of diet and to reduce the climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women. Nutritional Status, Quality of Diet and Quality of Life in Postmenopausal Women with Mild Climacteric Symptoms Based on Food Group Intake Patterns

Objectives :The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Daeyeongjeongami-bang on menopausal disorder patients. Methods :We recruited 3 menopausal disorder patients who have been suffering from hot flush, fatigue and depression. In addition, the patients had been administrated Daeyeongjeongami-bang. The patients of menopausal disorder had been estimated with Kupperman's index, Menopause rating scale, Beck's depression Inventory, Self rating depression scale, Visual analogue scale and Heart rate variability. We measured Kupperman's index, Menopause rating scale, Beck's depression inventory and Self rating depression scale for every seven days. Heart rate variability was estimated twice, before and after the treatment. Results :After the treatments, symptoms of menopausal disorder were decre ased.Conclusions :This study suggests that Daeyeongjeongami-bang is significantly effective on menopausal disorder patients wit h hot flush, fatigue and depression. The Clinical Study of 3 Menopausal Disorder Patients with Hot Flush and Depression Treated by Daeyeongjeongami-bang

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the antithrombotic effects of the four herbal ingredients (Mume Fructus, MF; Santali Albi Lignum, SAL; Amomi Tsao-Ko Fructus, ATF; and Amomi Fructus, AF) of modified Jeho-tang (MJHT) in a ferric chloride (FeCl₃)-induced carotid arterial thrombosis model. Methods: Thirty minutes prior to a 35% FeCl₃ application, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were injected with saline, MF, SAL, ATF or AF (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection), respectively. The effect of the MJHT ingredients was examined for time to occlusion (TTO) and thrombus weight (TW) in a FeCl₃-induced thrombosis model. Histological analysis was performed to examine the effect of the MJHT ingredients on collagen fiber damage using hematoxylin & eosin and Masson’s trichrome staining. Results: Compared with vehicle treatment, MF, SAL and ATF treatment delayed TTO (vehicle, 8.11 ± 0.60 min; MF, 16.67 ± 1.03 min; SAL, 17.50 ± 1.52 min and ATF, 13.33 ± 1.21 min; P Conclusions: Altogether, these results are the first evidence that the MJHT ingredients MF, SAL and ATF have the ability to prevent vascular damage and thrombus formation in FeCl₃-induced carotid arterial thrombosis.

Anti-thrombotic Effects of Modified Jeho-tang using a FeCl₃-induced Carotid Arterial Thrombosis Model

The extracts of Agrimonia pilosa L. were investigated for the inhibitory effect on the melanin synthesis in B16/F10 mouse melanoma cells as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were 42% in A. pilosa L. 70% ethanol extract at 500 µg/mL. The protein and mRNA expression of tyrosinase, which are all skin-whitening related factors, showed that A. pilosa L. water and A. pilosa L. 70% ethanol extracts inhibited the protein bio-synthesis in B16F10 melanoma cell. Results indicate that the A. pilosa L. extracts tested in the present study have skin whitening activity and can be used as a functional ingredient for cosmetic compositions.

Purpose : This study was performed to assess the clinical effect of Daejo-hwan(DJH) on climacteric syndrome, not only common symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, palpitation and so on, but also urogenital tract disturbances like vaginal dryness and sexual problems. Methods : We randomly divided 120 women with the climacteric syndrome into two groups. One group received only DJH 2 pills(4g) a time, three times a day for 8 weeks and the other group didn't get any treatment for the same period. We evaluated sonography, DXA, blood test, female hormone test and questionnaires in the beginning as well as after 8 weeks of the treatment. Symptoms were measured by Kupperman's index, Menopausal Rating Scale and the Greene Climacteric Scale. Results : In this study, DJH was innoxious on liver and kidney. And DJH in the treated group reduced climacteric symptoms significantly as compared to the control group without enlargement of uterus myoma and the change of estradiol. In Kupperman's index and MRS, DJH in the treated group especially had effects on fatigue, shoulder pain. anxiety, headache, hot flushes as well as sexual problems. Conclusion : These results suggest that DJH can be useful in treating various climacteric symptoms including sexual problems without influences on the size of uterus myoma and estradiol.

To elucidate inhibitory effects of Polygonum multiflorum on melanin synthesis, we determined the melanin release and melanin production in B16F10. And to investigate the action mechanism, we assessed the gene expression of tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2, MMP-2, PKA, PKC, ERK-1 ERK-2, AKT-1, MITF in B16F10.Results: 1. PM inhibited melanin-release, melanin production in B16F10.2. PM inhibited tyrosinase activity in vitro and in B16F10.3. PM suppressed the expression of tyrosinase, TRP-1 in B16F10.4. PM suppressed the expression of PKA in B16F10.5. PM suppressed the expression of ERK-1, ERK-2, AKT-1 in B16F10.6. PM suppressed the expression of MITF in B16F10.Conclusion: From these results, it may be concluded that PM possesses the antimelanogenetic effects.Key Words: Polygonum multiflorum(PM), whitening, melanogenesis, Tyrosinase.
