Gender differences in burnout: A meta-analysis

SUMMARY Burnout is a syndrome composed of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization of clients, and loss of feelings of personal accomplishment. It is widely believed that the burnout syndrome is most applicable to human service workers due to the emotional demands of their work. Residential child care workers are uniquely prone to burnout, because they endure all the same stressors as other members of the human service field, yet they often do not receive the same level of respect or appreciation. The problem of child care worker burnout can negatively impact an organization by increasing turnover, which has significant negative impacts on the well-being of the children as well as financial repercussions on the organization. This meta-analytic study of 71 independent samples from 66 studies (N = 48,528) examined the relationship between job control and burnout. Based on the Conservation of Resources model, job control was hypothesised to have a stronger relationship with depersonalisation and personal accomplishment than with emotional exhaustion. Overall, results supported the main hypothesis. Moderator analyses indicated that the relations tended to be different depending on job types, the national power distance scores of the samples, and the response formats of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The results imply that interventions in job control can reduce depersonalisation and enhance personal accomplishment.
