Polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites: a review from preparation to processing

Multiscale modeling and simulation of polymer nanocomposites

Conditions were established for dispersing clay nanolayers into both cis-1,4-polyisoprene (synthetic) natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized natural rubbers (ENR) having 25 or 50 mol % epoxide. The clay was a sodium montmorillonite and was used as a pristine layered silicate or as organically modified layered silicates to make the galleries more hydrophobic and thus more compatible with the elastomers. The chemical modifications were carried out using an ion-exchange reaction with alkyl ammonium cations. Incorporation of the clays into the elastomers was achieved by mixing the components themselves in a standard internal blender or by mixing dispersions of them in toluene or methyl ethyl ketone. X-ray diffraction results indicated intercalation of NR and ENR into the silicate interlayers, followed by exfoliation of the silicate layers into the elastomer matrices. Of primary interest was the effect of the intercalated and exfoliated clays on the mechanical properties of the elastomers. The reinforcing effects obtained were found to depend strongly on the extent of the dispersion of the silicate layers into the rubber matrices. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Clay nanolayer reinforcement of cis‐1,4‐polyisoprene and epoxidized natural rubber

Synthesis, structure, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of some polysulfone/organoclay nanocomposites

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation of a bead–spring polymer model has been conducted for polymer melt confined between two solid walls. The wall effect was studied by changing the distance between the walls and the wall–polymer interaction. It was observed that the polymers near the walls are compressed towards the walls: the component of the radius of gyration tensor perpendicular to the wall surfaces decreases in a layer near the walls. The thickness of this surface layer, estimated from the analysis of the static polymer structure, is about 1.0–1.5 times the radius of gyration Rg in the bulk, and is independent of the distance between the walls and the wall–polymer interaction. The relaxation time of the polymers, obtained from the autocorrelation of normal modes, increases with increasing the strength of the wall–polymer interaction and with decreasing the distance between the walls. These wall effects are observed at a distance much larger than Rg. This result is in agreement with the recent dielectric measurements of cis-polyisoprene confined between mica surfaces reported by Cho, Watanabe, and Granick [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 9688 (1999)]. The thickness of the surface layer was also estimated by the position dependence of the static and dynamic properties, and was found to agree with that estimated by the viscoelastic measurements.

Molecular dynamics study of polymer melt confined between walls

Polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites may be formed by annealing layered silicate particles with a polymer melt. Polymer molecules flow from a bulk melt into the galleries between silicate sheets, swelling the silicate structure. The use of an amphiphilic intercalant raises possibilities of forming novel structures and enhancing the intercalation kinetics relative to the case of homopolymer intercalants. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of the flow of a symmetric diblock copolymer from a bulk melt into a slit whose surfaces are modified by grafted surfactant chains, and whose walls are maintained at a constant pressure to permit the slit to open as polymer intercalates. Intercalation kinetics are examined for a variety of polymer–surface and interblock interactions and for thermodynamic states in which the bulk polymer occupies either a lamellar or disordered phase. Comparison to previous simulations of homopolymer intercalation demonstrates that diblock copolymers may be used to intercalate a block that would not spontaneously intercalate as a homopolymer.
