Opportunities and challenges in sustainable treatment and resource reuse of sewage sludge: A review

Treatment of biowaste, the predominant waste fraction in low- and middle-income settings, offers public health, environmental and economic benefits by converting waste into a hygienic product, diverting it from disposal sites, and providing a source of income. This article presents a comprehensive overview of 13 biowaste treatment technologies, grouped into four categories: (1) direct use (direct land application, direct animal feed, direct combustion), (2) biological treatment (composting, vermicomposting, black soldier fly treatment, anaerobic digestion, fermentation), (3) physico-chemical treatment (transesterification, densification), and (4) thermo-chemical treatment (pyrolysis, liquefaction, gasification). Based on a literature review and expert consultation, the main feedstock requirements, process conditions and treatment products are summarized, and the challenges and trends, particularly regarding the applicability of each technology in the urban low- and middle-income context, are critically discussed. An analysis of the scientific articles published from 2005 to 2015 reveals substantial differences in the amount and type of research published for each technology, a fact that can partly be explained with the development stage of the technologies. Overall, publications from case studies and field research seem disproportionately underrepresented for all technologies. One may argue that this reflects the main task of researchers—to conduct fundamental research for enhanced process understanding—but it may also be a result of the traditional embedding of the waste sector in the discipline of engineering science, where socio-economic and management aspects are seldom object of the research. More unbiased, well-structured and reproducible evidence from case studies at scale could foster the knowledge transfer to practitioners and enhance the exchange between academia, policy and practice.

Environmental Impact Assessment of FGD plant operation at TPP 'Kostolac B' is an integral part of technical documentation on Development of Investments, prepared for the Basic Design of the future FGD plant. The Study is developed with a goal to show the current state of the environment in the area of interest, to consider and analyze positive and negative environmental effects resulting from the future construction of FGD plant. The Study also proposes technical and organizational measures aimed at prevention and mitigation of environmental impact of the future plant operation, especially with respect to collection and disposal of solid and liquid waste, soil and groundwater protection, wastewater management etc. In order to determine effects of the future FGD plant on the air quality over the closer and broader area of the TPP 'Kostolac B' appropriate air pollution model has been developed. Analysis has been based on investigation of the effects of different pollutant emissions scenarios from both units of TPP 'Kostolac B' on the air quality in central Serbia. .

Constant demand for development and construction improvement of small scale pellet stoves and boilers (nominal power up to 50 kWth) for household heating leads to conclusion that appropriate upgrading should be done on that field. Optimisation of stove construction should be performed based on results of experimental tests, as well as results of numerical analysis and mathematical modelling of combustion process. This is compulsory, because stove construction shall comply with demands for energy and environmental characteristics defined in appropriate quality standards. Besides, stove should operate with pellets of different quality, produced from various biomass raw materials. Considering that numerical analysis is less time consuming process than experimental tests, nowadays it is more often used for development and improvement of combustion appliance construction. As the turbulence modelling is one of the key parts in the eligible numerical analysis, the aim of the research presented in this paper is to define the influence of different k-e turbulence models and their application on defined CFD mathematical model of combustion process in small-scale pellet stove for household heating.

The kinetic study of juice industry residues drying process based on TGA-DTG experimental data

Different mathematical models can describe coal devolatilization as the part of combustion process. Some models are simple, while others are more complex and take into account coal's complexity and heterogeneity of structure. A chemical percolation devolatilization model for describing the devolatilization process of two Serbian lignites from Kostolac and Kolubara open coal mines was studied. Results of the model were compared to devolatilization measurements obtained from two experimental methods – a wire mesh reactor and thermogravimetric analysis. Two coal samples with four different granulations were investigated for each lignite under different experimental conditions (different maximum temperatures and heating rates). Total volatile yields obtained from the wire mesh reactor and thermogravimetric analysis together with results predicted by the chemical percolation devolatilization model are presented and compared with literature data. For thermogravimetric analysis simulation, the chemical percolation devolatilization model yielded better results in cases where the kinetic parameters obtained under experimental conditions were used rather than kinetic parameters derived from predefined values in the model itself. For wire mesh reactor, the chemical percolation devolatilization model predictions of devolatilization were mixed and were dependent on temperature.

AGROinLOG project has tested the integrated biomass logistics centres (IBLC) concept in three real agro-industries in Europe The relevance of the IBLC strategy relies on the fact that it allows agro-industries to create a new activity with lower investment, increasing incomes, stabilizing their annual activity (avoiding idle periods) and maintaining or creating new jobs The demos’ studies were performed in Spain at a fodder industry, in Greece at an olive oil industry, and in Sweden inside a cereal processing industry AGROinLOG validated these demos´ business models from a holistic perspective, also studying the replicability of the IBLC business model in other agro-industries from different sectors (vegetable oil extraction, olive oil chain, feed & fodder, wine, grain chain and sugar industry) Sectorial analysis was carried out as well, allowing the identification of opportunities among the targeted sector to replicate the IBLC concept, drawing barriers to overcome in each case Thus, technical, economic and environmental feasibility of integrated biomass logistics centers (IBLCs) for food and non-food products have been assessed in detail
