Wetlands as large-scale nature-based solutions : Status and challenges for research, engineering and management

Large parts of Central Asia are characterized by a semiarid to arid climate. Therefore, areas close to shallow groundwater, rivers and lakes are characterized by unique water-dependent ecosystems and human societies which have developed over millennia in close interaction with the naturally limited water resources. In the early 21st century, global climate change, population growth, river damming, large-scale water abstractions and rising levels of pollution exert multiple pressures on the region’s water resources, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems at historically high levels. Water scarcity threatens the livelihood of populations locally and in transboundary settings by a growing competition over a limited resource. This context is of particular importance since all major rivers of the region cross at least one international border. The complexity and character of water-related challenges in the region mean that management approaches need to be integrative, taking into account the natural resource basis, environmental limits and the socio-cultural and geopolitical dimension. This paper frames the thematic issue of Environmental Earth Sciences and provides a comprehensive overview about the current state of knowledge about water resources and their management in Central Asia. There is a focus on case studies looking at the Selenga–Baikal–Angara Basin, the Lake Aral Basin including the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river systems, the Tarim and the Illi River Basins. Aiming to be an up-to-date interdisciplinary scientific reference on the region’s water-related challenges, this thematic issue gives theoretical and practical insights into solutions and best practice examples of water management.

Water resources and their management in central Asia in the early twenty first century: status, challenges and future prospects

Efforts are increasingly being made to classify the world’s wetland resources, an important ecosystem and habitat that is diminishing in abundance. There are multiple remote sensing classification methods, including a suite of nonparametric classifiers such as decision-tree (DT), rule-based (RB), and random forest (RF). High-resolution satellite imagery can provide more specificity to the classified end product, and ancillary data layers such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and hydrogeomorphic layers such as distance-to-a-stream can be coupled to improve overall accuracy (OA) in wetland studies. In this paper, we contrast three nonparametric machine-learning algorithms (DT, RB, and RF) using a large field-based dataset (n = 228) from the Selenga River Delta of Lake Baikal, Russia. We also explore the use of ancillary data layers selected to improve OA, with a goal of providing end users with a recommended classifier to use and the most parsimonious suite of input parameters for classifying wetland-dominated landscapes. Though all classifiers appeared suitable, the RF classification outperformed both the DT and RB methods, achieving OA >81%. Including a texture metric (homogeneity) substantially improved the classification OA. However, including vegetation/soil/water metrics (based on WorldView-2 band combinations), hydrogeomorphic data layers, and elevation data layers to increase the descriptive content of the input parameters surprisingly did not markedly improve the OA. We conclude that, in most cases, RF should be the classifier of choice. The potential exception to this recommendation is under the circumstance where the end user requires narrative rules to best manage his or her resource. Though not useful in this study, continuously increasing satellite imagery resolution and band availability suggests the inclusion of ancillary contextual data layers such as soil metrics or elevation data, the granularity of which may define its utility in subsequent wetland classifications.

Decision-Tree, Rule-Based, and Random Forest Classification of High-Resolution Multispectral Imagery for Wetland Mapping and Inventory.

Many Asian rivers have been intensively used to boost economic growth, resulting in sudden and drastic changes in sediment transport patterns. However, a few rivers are still undisturbed. The present paper considers the unregulated Selenga River and its basin, located in Russia and Mongolia. The river contributes to 50 % of the total inflow to Lake Baikal. Pending scientific challenges include the quantification of sediment loads and erosion–deposition patterns along the Selenga River system, the understanding of suspended particulate matter composition and the importance of peak flow events for total sediment discharge and heavy metal transport. Field data and hydraulic modeling converge on showing that peak flow events during spring and summer contribute to the main part (70–80 %) of the annual sediment and pollution loads in upstream parts of the basin. The Selenga River carries mostly silt and sand. The average particle size differs by a factor of four between summer floods and base flow periods. The low amount of particulate organic matter (ranging between 1 and 16 % in the studied rivers) is consistent with the significant role of sediments originating from mining areas and in-channel sources. The bed load transport in the downstream part of the river basin is high (up to 50 % of the total transport), and channel storage plays an important role in the total sediment transport to Lake Baikal. Reported statistically significant multi-decadal declines in sediment fluxes in the downstream Selenga River can be attributed to the abandonment of cultivated lands and (most likely) to changing hydroclimatic factors.

Spatio-temporal variation of sediment transport in the Selenga River Basin, Mongolia and Russia

Mining and ore excavation can cause the acidification and heavy metal pollution of downstream water systems. It can be difficult to assess the load contributions from individual mining areas, which is commonly required for environmental impact assessments. In the current study, we quantified the net impact of the unmonitored mining activities in the Zaamar Goldfield (Mongolia) on heavy metal transport in the downstream Tuul River–Selenga River–Lake Baikal water systems. We also noted that the Zaamar site shares the conditions of limited monitoring with many rapidly developing regions of the world. The heavy metal concentrations and flow data were obtained from historical measurement campaigns, long-term monitoring, and a novel field campaign. The results indicate that natural mass flows of heavy metals in dissolved form increased by an order of magnitude because of mining. Prevailing alkaline conditions in the vicinity of Zaamar can limit the dissolution, maintaining the on-site concentrations below health-risk based guideline values. However, suspended river concentrations are much higher than the dissolved concentrations. The placer gold mining at the Zaamar site has increased the total riverine mass flows of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn by 44.300, 30.1, 65.7, 47.800, 1.480, 76.0 and 65.0 tonnes per year respectively. We suggest that local to regional transformation and enrichment processes in combination with suspended sediment transport from numerous existing upstream mining areas contribute to high concentrations of dissolved heavy metals in downstream parts of the Selenga River, including its delta area at Lake Baikal. Furthermore, single hydrological events can increase the suspended load concentrations by at least one order of magnitude. Overall, the Selenga River Basin, which drains into Lake Baikal, should be recognised as one of the world's most impacted areas with regard to heavy metal loads, and it contributes to 1% and 3% of the world flux of dissolved Fe and Pb, respectively.

Gold mining impact on riverine heavy metal transport in a sparsely monitored region: the upper Lake Baikal Basin case

We synthesized recent field-based estimates of the dissolved ions (K +  Na +  Ca 2+  Mg 2+  Cl -  SO 4 2-  HCO 3 - ), biogens (NO 3 - , NO 2 - , PO 4 3- )(C, mg/l), heavy metal (Fe sum , Mn, Pb) and dissolved load (DL, kg/day), as far as suspended sediment concentration (SSC, mg/l) and suspended load (SL, kg/day) along upper Selenga river and its tributaries based on literature review and preliminary results of our 2011 field campaign. The crucial task of this paper is to provide full review of Russian, Mongolian and English-language literature which concern the matter fluxes in the upper part of Selenga river (within Mongolia). The exist estimates are compared with locations of 3 main matter sources within basin: mining and industry, river-bank erosion and slope wash. The heaviest increase of suspended and dissolved matter transport is indicated along Tuul-Orkhon river system (right tributary of the Selenga River where Mongolia capital Ulanbaatar, gold mine Zaamar and few other mines are located). In measurement campaigns conducted in 2005, 2006 and 2008 the increase directly after the Zaamar mining site was between 167 to 383 kg/day for Fe, between 15 and 5260 kg/day for Mn. Our field campaign indicated increase of suspended load along Tuul river from 4280 kg/day at the upstream point to 712000 kg/day below Ulaanbaatar and Zaamar. The results provide evidence on a potential connection between increased dissolved and suspended matter fluxes in transboundary rivers and zones of matter supply at industrial and mining centers, along eroded river banks and pastured lands. The gaps in the understanding of matter load fluxes within this basin are discussed with regards to determining further goals of hydrological and geochemical surveys.

Suspended and dissolved matter fluxes in the upper selenga river basin

Paper provides basin-scale integrated assessment of water resources of the largest tributary of Lake Baikal (the Selenga River) extending from northern Mongolia into southern Siberia in Russia with special emphasis on total flow of water through a basin, its quality, structures, laws and economic factors that control its use for the present and future. The water quality and flow data were obtained from historical measurement campaigns, longterm national monitoring, and a novel field campaign done in 2011-2012. The results provide evidence on a very low water availability in upper parts of the basin and insufficient water quality exhibiting high concentrations of dissolved and suspended heavy metals in downstream parts of the Selenga River where elevated concentrations of dissolved and suspended forms of Mn, Fe, Cu, Mo are observed with local 10-20-fold increases of maximum permissible concentrations MPC below large industrial and mining centers. The main pressure on water resources is reported for some Mongolian (Tuul below Ulanbaatar and Zaamar goldfield and the Khangal River below coppermolybdenum mine-mill complex Erdenet) and Russian rivers (Modonkul-Dzhida River system below Zakamensk wolfram-molybdenum mining and processing factory). We concluded that future water resources will depend on general socio-economic trends in both Mongolia and Russia with special focus on development of mining concessions which overlap with current or planned hydropower projects and population changes and thus water consumption in the region. Political and economic dialogue between two transboundary countries will determine status of water resources in the near future. We argue that water conservation in the Selenga River Basin should benefit from introduction of market-based mechanisms in water policy.
