The purpose of this report is to propose a Common Modular Architecture (CMA) approach, adopting an open system architecture (OSA) idea for major functions, and applying it via the subfunction(s) of that major function. The architecture also incorporates the major function output interface via the platform's OSA to the maximum extent possible. Report on Common Modular Architecture (CMA) for the embedded GPS receiver

Summary Today, avionics are demanding an increasing proportion of the resources available for aircraft weapons systems. These avionics are providing increased capability and accuracy to the aircraft weapon system; but, also are a prime contributor to increased complexity and decreased reliability of the system. Digital avionics appears to offer the desired increase in capabilities and performance without the normal companions of low reliability, complexity, and high cost because it is amenable to mechanization via solid state devices; it is more orderly and systematic, and provides growth and change without major hardware modification. Digital avionic integration, in order to reap these benefits, requires standard equipment interfaces and a standard approach to data intercommunication. The time division data bus is the technique that permits this new concept of system integration to emerge. This paper will present the data bus evolutions, its standardization and application. The acquisition management and logistic benefits will be discussed. Definitions
