Journal ArticleDOI

The membrane lung

TL;DR: Teflon is the most satisfactory membrane presently available for use in an artificial lung, and adequate oxygenation is achieved with a relatively crude lung design, utilizing 20 to 25 per cent of the maximum membrane diffusibility for oxygen.
Journal ArticleDOI

Left ventricular dynamics in the dog under chronic pressure load from coarctation of the aorta

TL;DR: In rats with aortic constriction it was demonstrated tha t maximal cardiac output following polyvinylpyrrolidone infusion was larger than in normal animals, and these findings suggested tha t the myocardial "reserve toree" was increased in the hypertrophied hearts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Techniques of Extended Perfusion Using a Membrane Lung

TL;DR: Nine lightly sedated, chronically instrumented, trained dogs underwent venoarterial bypass for 5 hours, and all animals exhibited a reduction in pulse, respiration, systolic pressure, cardiac contractility, and external cardiac work.
