Wild relatives of common wheat, Triticum aestivum, and related species are an important source of disease and pest resistance and several useful traits have been transferred from these species to wheat. C-banding and in situ hybridization analyses are powerful cytological techniques allowing the detection of alien chromatin in wheat. C-banding permits identification of the wheat and alien chromosomes involved in wheat-alien translocations, whereas genomic in situ hybridization analysis allows determination of their size and breakpoint positions. The present review summarizes the available data on wheat-alien transfers conferring resistance to diseases and pests. Ten of the 57 spontaneous and induced wheat-alien translocations were identified as whole arm translocations with the breakpoints within the centromeric regions. The majority of transfers (45) were identified as terminal translocations with distal alien segments translocated to wheat chromosome arms. Only two intercalary wheat-alien transloctions were identified, one induced by radiation treatment with a small segment of rye chromosome 6RL (H25) inserted into the long arm of wheat chromosome 4A, and the other probably induced by homoeologous recombination with a segment derived from the long arm of a group 7 Agropyron elongatum chromosome with Lr19 inserted into the long arm of 7D. The presented information should be useful for further directed chromosome engineering aimed at producing superior germplasm.

Characterization of wheat-alien translocations conferring resistance to diseases and pests: current status

Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) using genomic DNA probes from Thinopyrum elongatum (Host) D.R. Dewey (genome E, 2n = 14), Thinopyrum bessarabicum (Savul. & Rayss) A. Love (genome J, 2n = 14), and Pseudoroegneria strigosa (M. Bieb.) A. Love (genome S, 2n = 14), was used to examine the genomic constitution of Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey (2n = 6x = 42) and Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey (2n = 10x = 70). Evidence from GISH indicated that hexaploid Th, intermedium contained the J, Js, and S genomes, in which the J genome was related to the E genome of Th. elongatum and the J genome of Th. bessarabicum. The S genome was homologous to the S genome of Ps. strigosa, while the Js genome referred to modified J- or E-type chromosomes distinguished by the presence of S genome specific sequences close to the centromere. Decaploid Th. ponticum had only the two basic genomes J and Js. The Js genome present in Th. intermedium and Th. ponticum was homologous with E or J genomes, but was quite distinct at centromeric regions, which can strongly hybridize with the S genome DNA probe. Based on GISH results, the genomic formula of Th. intermedium was redesignated JJsS and that of Th. ponticum was redesignated JJJJsJs. The finding of a close relationship among S, J, and Js genomes provides valuable markers for molecular cytogenetic analyses using S genome DNA probes to monitor the transfer of useful traits from Th. intermedium and Th. ponticum to wheat.

Wide crosses in wheat are reviewed in relation to various factors that facilitate wide crossing to show that wide crosses can be as wide as one can make them. Included in this review is a particular reference to wheat-wheatgrass (Agropyron complex) crosses and an update on wide crosses of wheat with various genera of Agropyron complex. Hybrid seed set is too variable to predict whether a wide hybrid, where no seed was obtained in one attempt, will not be possible. High crossability genes seem to facilitate not only fertilization but also seed development, enabling embryo rescue. Variability for crossability occurs not only in wheat but also in alien species. Contrary to conventional thinking, several wide hybrids with wheat can be produced when species with lower chromosome numbers are used as female parents. Pre-and post-fertilization barriers to wide crosses do not appear to be equally strong, and can be overcome by the development and application of various technologies. Considering these aspects of wide hybridization, and based on recent successes in producing previously unsuccessful and very wide hybrids, it is concluded that how wide cross between plant species can be made is an open question and that many new and wider hybrids can be produced in future.

How wide can a wide cross be

The wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella, and the plant viruses it transmits represent an invasive mite-virus complex that has affected cereal crops worldwide. The main damage caused by WCM comes from its ability to transmit and spread multiple damaging viruses to cereal crops, with Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV) being the most important. Although WCM and transmitted viruses have been of concern to cereal growers and researchers for at least six decades, they continue to represent a challenge. In older affected areas, for example in North America, this mite-virus complex still has significant economic impact. In Australia and South America, where this problem has only emerged in the last decade, it represents a new threat to winter cereal production. The difficulties encountered in making progress towards managing WCM and its transmitted viruses stem from the complexity of the pathosystem. The most effective methods for minimizing losses from WCM transmitted viruses in cereal crops have previously focused on cultural and plant resistance methods. This paper brings together information on biological and ecological aspects of WCM, including its taxonomic status, occurrence, host plant range, damage symptoms and economic impact. Information about the main viruses transmitted by WCM is also included and the epidemiological relationships involved in this vectored complex of viruses are also addressed. Management strategies that have been directed at this mite-virus complex are presented, including plant resistance, its history, difficulties and advances. Current research perspectives to address this invasive mite-virus complex and minimize cereal crop losses worldwide are also discussed.
