Hemocompatibility and Hemolytic Effects of Functionalized Nanoparticles on Red Blood Cells: A Recent Review Study

Magnetic fluid-loaded liposomes (MFLs) were fabricated using magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) and natural phospholipids via the thin film hydration method followed by extrusion. The size distribution and composition of MFLs were studied using dynamic light scattering and spectrophotometry. The effective ranges of magnetite concentration in MNPs hydrosol and MFLs for contrasting at both T2 and T1 relaxation were determined. On T2 weighted images, the MFLs effectively increased the contrast if compared with MNPs hydrosol, while on T1 weighted images, MNPs hydrosol contrasting was more efficient than that of MFLs. In vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrasting properties of MFLs and their effects on tumor and normal tissues morphology, were investigated in rats with transplanted renal cell carcinoma upon intratumoral administration of MFLs. No significant morphological changes in rat internal organs upon intratumoral injection of MFLs were detected, suggesting that the liposomes are relatively safe and can be used as the potential contrasting agents for MRI.

Liposomes loaded with hydrophilic magnetite nanoparticles: Preparation and application as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging

In female Wistar rats, we studied the effects of daily 20-day administration of intragastric suspension of nanosized calcium oxide on hematological indices (the counts of erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, stab/segmented neutrophils, and the eosinophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) and morphometric parameters of erythrocytes (equivalent Feret’s diameter, sphericity, aspect ratio, and convexity). The study revealed significantly (up to 3.1 times) decreased levels of hemoglobin, platelets, hematocrit, averaged content of hemoglobin in erythrocyte, and platelet volume relatively to the control values. The established morphometric parameters of blood erythrocytes attested to predominance of spherocytes, which can be regarded as systemic response of the body to calcium oxide nanoparticles fraught with possible deterioration of perfusion in microvasculature and hypoxia in the tissues.

Exploration of the potential of Co/Cu co-doped Fe2O4 for medical applications: nanostructure, catalytic properties, and blood compatibility

A new high-precision technique for calculating the ratio of the erythrocyte area/volume using atomic-force microscopy has been developed. The method was tested on erythrocytes of healthy donors. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, and X-ray microanalysis revealed that magnetite nanoparticles can interact with erythrocyte membranes in vitro. This interaction resulted in the development of a pathology of erythrocytes typical for poikilocytosis and anisocytosis. When the magnetite was incubated with erythrocytes in a serum-free medium, nanoparticles aggregated.
