Two-photon absorption has important advantages over conventional one-photon absorption, which has led to applications in microscopy, microfabrication, three-dimensional data storage, optical power limiting, up-converted lasing, photodynamic therapy, and for the localized release of bio-active species. These applications have generated a demand for new dyes with high two-photon absorption cross-sections. This Review introduces the theory of two-photon absorption, surveys the wide range of potential applications, and highlights emerging structure-property correlations that can serve as guidelines for the development of efficient two-photon dyes.

Two-photon absorption and the design of two-photon dyes.

Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) are a promising cost-effective alternative to silicon-based solar cells, and possess light-weight, low-cost, and flexibility advantages. Significant progress has been achieved in the development of novel photovoltaic materials and device structures in the last decade. Nowadays small molecular semiconductors for OPVs have attracted considerable attention, due to their advantages over their polymer counterparts, including well-defined molecular structure, definite molecular weight, and high purity without batch to batch variations. The highest power conversion efficiencies of OPVs based on small molecular donor/fullerene acceptors or polymeric donor/fullerene acceptors are up to 6.7% and 8.3%, respectively, and meanwhile nonfullerene acceptors have also exhibited some promising results. In this review we summarize the developments in small molecular donors, acceptors (fullerene derivatives and nonfullerene molecules), and donor–acceptor dyad systems for high-performance multilayer, bulk heterojunction, and single-component OPVs. We focus on correlations of molecular chemical structures with properties, such as absorption, energy levels, charge mobilities, and photovoltaic performances. This structure–property relationship analysis may guide rational structural design and evaluation of photovoltaic materials (253 references).

The nonlinear optical properties of two novel graphene nanohybrid materials covalently functionalized with porphyrin and fullerene were investigated by using the Z-scan technique at 532 nm in the nanosecond and picosecond time scale. Results show that covalently functionalizing graphene with the reverse saturable absorption chromospheres porphyrin and fullerene can enhance the nonlinear optical performance in the nanosecond regime. The covalently linked graphene nanohybrids offer performance superior to that of the individual graphene, porphyrin, and fullerene by combination of a nonlinear mechanism and the photoinduced electron or energy transfer between porphyrin or fullerene moiety and graphene.

Porphyrin and Fullerene Covalently Functionalized Graphene Hybrid Materials with Large Nonlinear Optical Properties

Porphyrins and phthalocyanines have outstanding chemical and thermal stability. The macrocyclic structure and chemical reactivity of tetrapyrroles offers architectural flexibility and facilitates the tailoring of chemical, physical and optoelectronic parameters. The specific optical properties of the tetrapyrrole macrocycle combined with the synthetic methodologies now available and the already available theoretical and spectroscopic knowledge on their optical behavior make porphyrins a target of choice for this area. They are versatile organic nanomaterials with a rich photochemistry and their excited state properties are easily modulated through conformational design, molecular symmetry, metal complexation, orientation and strength of the molecular dipole moment, size and degree of conjugation of the π-systems, and appropriate donor-acceptor substituents. Here we review the structural chemistry and optical properties of recently synthesized porphyrin derivatives that offer potential for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications and complement existing studies on phthalocyanines. Classes of interest include the classic A4 symmetric tetrapyrroles, while optimized systems include push-pull porphyrins, oligomeric and supramolecular self-assembled systems, films and nanoparticle systems, and highly conjugated porphyrin arrays.
