Optical fiber communication: from transmission to networking

This paper reviews the work performed under the European ESPRIT project DO/spl I.bar/ALL (Digital OpticAL Logic modules) spanning from advanced devices (semiconductor optical amplifiers) to all-optical modules (laser sources and gates) and from optical signal processing subsystems (packet clock recovery, optical write/store memory, and linear feedback shift register) to their integration in the application level for the demonstration of nontrivial logic functionality (all-optical bit-error-rate tester and a 2/spl times/2 exchange-bypass switch). The successful accomplishment of the project's goals has opened the road for the implementation of more complex ultra-high-speed all-optical signal processing circuits that are key elements for the realization of all-optical packet switching networks.

In the last few years customers are willing to use broadband connections to support concurrent and heterogeneous services. At the same time telecommunication operators would like to use the same transport infrastructure (possibly with minor changes) to deliver these emerging services in an integrated way. To this purpose, enhancements of the existing ASTN architecture are proposed. Specifically the intelligent network conceptual model is used to introduce an intermediate layer, named service layer, to interface the network customer to a service-independent transport network. The service plane has the task of masking the transport-related implementation details from the abstract request of a service by a customer. In addition, the service layer inherently suggests the separation of the telecommunication operators role in two distinct activities: the network provider and the service provider. The proposed service-oriented architecture is described in terms of functional blocks and interfaces and it consists in an open framework subjects to be implemented using whatever technology, both hardware and software. For a proof of concept, a testbed, named SOON (service oriented optical networks) running the newly developed service-oriented software modules has been implemented as an example of direct interaction between customer and optical network for a dynamic service request. The validation of the architecture is done by demonstrating a working service, namely a virtual private network (VPN) service.

A novel service oriented framework for automatically switched transport network

Optical nonlinearity in 2D materials excited by spatial Gaussian laser beam is a novel and peculiar optical phenomenon, which exhibits many novel and interesting applications in optical nonlinear devices. Passive photonic devices, such as optical switches, optical logical gates, photonic diodes, and optical modulators, are the key compositions in the future all-optical signal-processing technologies. Passive photonic devices using 2D materials to achieve the device functionality have attracted widespread concern in the past decade. In this Review, an overview of the spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) in 2D materials is summarized, including the operating mechanism, optical parameter measurement, and tuning for 2D materials, and applications in photonic devices. Moreover, some current challenges are also proposed to solve, and some possible applications of SSPM method are predicted for the future. Therefore, it is anticipated that this summary can contribute to the application of 2D material-based spatial effect in all-optical signal-processing technologies.

Recent Advances of Spatial Self‐Phase Modulation in 2D Materials and Passive Photonic Device Applications

In this letter, we demonstrate an optically addressable 2 /spl times/ 2 exchange-bypass switch operating with 10-Gb/s data packets. Switching is achieved at the bit level using an ultrafast nonlinear interferometer gate with two input data signals and a single control signal. The bit error rate of the switch in a static configuration was estimated to be 10/sup -11/ using synchronous digital hierarchy 64 data frames.

Optical networks are growing at unprecedented rates to accommodate the explosion in data traffic brought on by new Internet and enterprise applications. Coupled with this growth has been the introduction of client devices (e.g., routers, storage devices, and content servers) at the network edge operating at optical line rates. These two trends are changing the fundamental way in which optical transport networks are being architectured, deployed, and managed. Emerging intelligent optical networks address the traffic scaling challenge. Additionally, when combined with modern service management technologies, these networks open exciting opportunities for delivering new customized optical services directly to end-users, allowing carriers to fully exploit the economics of optical transport. This article presents a network framework for delivering optical services.
