The concept of combining active devices with radiating elements for broadband active antenna design was proposed. An active microstrip transmit antenna was realized by using two sided structure and single-ended one-stage amplifier configuration. A 24 percent bandwidth, which is about 6 time that of the passive patch, was achieved both in terms of active reflection coefficient and flat gain of radiation, and about 9dB extra gain was obtained in the working band. The results are attractive for broadband MIC active array design and probably the same concept can be used in broadband MMIC applications such as in radar and satellite communication.

The new MBC technology offers excellent electrical and thermal properties for power applications, the possibility for separate batch processing of circuits and of active devices, and a very small circuit size that approaches that of the monolithic counterparts. The VCO developed with the MBC technology has excellent operating characteristics. It measures only 3.5 × 5.0 mm including all the circuitry required for operation.

Ku-Band VCO using Miniature Beryllia Circuit Technology

An active antenna sub-array that inlcudes a miniature two-stage batch processable amplifier driving clusters of circularly polarized patch resonator antenna elements is described. The resulting lightweight, low profile structure provides an efficient source of radiated microwave power that can become the building block for a high power solid state transmitter array.

A Circularly Polarized Active Antema Array Using Miniature GaAs FET Amplifiers

A planar active antenna array design combines miniature beryllia amplifiers using batch process techniques with an open-celled microstrip antenna. A thin, very light active antenna subarray using these technologies has been developed and tested.
