This paper reports an experimental method to estimate the convective heat transfer of cutting fluids in a laminar flow regime applied on a thin steel plate The heat source provided by the metal cutting was simulated by electrical heating of the plate Three different cooling conditions were evaluated: a dry cooling system, a flooded cooling system and a minimum quantity of lubrication cooling system, as well as two different cutting fluids for the last two systems The results showed considerable enhancement of convective heat transfer using the flooded system For the dry and minimum quantity of lubrication systems, the heat conduction inside the body was much faster than the heat convection away from its surface In addition, using the Biot number, the possible models were analyzed for conduction heat problems for each experimental condition tested

Physical Modeling for Selective Laser Sintering Process

A method of analysis is described which yields quasianalytical solutions for one and multidimensional unsteady heat conduction problems with linearly dependent thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity and volumetric specific heat The method accomodates rather general thermal boundary conditions including arbitrary variations in surface temperature or in surface heat flux or a convective exchange with a fluid having even varying temperature Once the solution for the identical problem but with constant properties has been developed, its practical realization is rather direct, being facilitated by a reduced number of iterations The four applied examples given in this work show that a wide variety of nonlinear heat conduction problems can be tackled by this procedure without much difficulty These simple solutions compare favorably with more laborious results reported in the archival heat transfer literature

M3 Heat Transfer to Falling Films at Vertical Surfaces

An analysis is presented for the heat transfer characteristics of a falling liquid film flow over a fin by the conjugate convection-conduction theory. Numerical results are presented for the dimensionless heat transfer coefficients, local and overall heat fluxes and temperature distribution of the fin by a simultaneous solution of the convective boundary layer equations of the fluid and the energy equation of the fin.
