Investigation of progress of reactions and evolution of radial heterogeneity in the initial stage of thermal stabilization of PAN precursor fibres

The formation of resin fillet between honeycomb core cell walls and skin in light sandwich structures was studied to gain a better understanding of the bonding process. A method was developed for tailoring the amount of adhesive between 8 and 80 g/m 2 . The size of the adhesive menisci and the contact angles between the adhesive and the skin and the core materials were measured. A model was developed to predict the size of the menisci. Their shape was driven by the surface energy of skin and honeycomb materials. When adhesive films were used for bonding, up to 50% of the adhesive did not form the menisci whereas 100% did when the newly developed adhesive deposition method on honeycomb was used, which allowed better bonding with lower weight.

Vacuum-bag processing of sandwich structures: role of honeycomb pressure level on skin-core adhesion and skin quality

Experimental design has been used to investigate the effect of processing parameters on the peel strength of Nomex honeycomb core/carbon fibre-epoxy prepreg skin sandwich panels, manufactured by vacuum bagging. The four processing parameters considered were: (i) consolidation pressure; (ii) temperature cure cycle; (iii) temperature ramp rate and (iv) vacuum pressure application time. Each parameter was considered at three levels. It was found that (ii) was the dominant parameter. Panels manufactured under the optimum combination of processing parameters gave a mean peel strength more than twice that of the worst panels. Qualitative microscopy has associated the higher peel strengths with larger, regular shaped adhesive fillets between honeycomb cell walls and skin laminate.
